smile DC Community help for earhquake / tsunami victoms

This is my 1st post, so please bear with me if I haven't done this correctly.
I have being involved with DC for many years now and have contributed to all sorts of projects, although I still haven't worked out how to make a "signature or stuff like that"
Anyway; the recent earthquake & tsunami in Japan has made me very aware of how natural events can cause instant destruction on a masive scale.
I would imagine most of us would have thoughts and good wishes for all people caught up in these types of event, and would gladly do whatever they could to help.
This is where the DC situation may be able to help??
Does anyone know of a DC program / research team that could develop something to pre-warn of an earthquake or the resulting tssunami ??
If not, this must be a very good subject that should be given a high priority ??
Likewise after such an event, the effects are devastating and again there must be something that the DC community can become involved with. Logistics / tracing missing people / medical needs / the list is endless. All these situations could be assisted by the huge amount of computing power that the DC (WCG) community has at its disposal, I'm sure.
Anyway that's my thought, please assist as you can and if anyone can harness the DC community, make yourself known, so that we can all get involved.
Thanks. Steve H

Hi SKIPSOFT1,

Indeed I think everyone's thoughts are with the Japanese people and indeed there is a DC type program that works on modern computers, laptops of certain types that have an accelerometer on board. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/raw-attachment...istensen_quakecatcher.pdf

The QCN project is not in the BOINC list for a reason... the limited devices that could contribute, but here is the site link http://qcn.stanford.edu/

edit: Just enrolled my Windows Laptop. The jobs run parallel with the regular BOINC jobs i.e. my duo is now running 3 jobs at the same time.

edit: The QCN network detected the ChristChurch earthquake http://qcn.stanford.edu/sensor/

Thank you, SKIPSOFT1, for raising the question and SekeRob for providing the links. I see on the QCN web page that, if your computer doesn't have an internal sensor, you can purchase an external USB sensor that will enable participation in Quake Catcher Network.

Yes indeed. The QCN sensory map shows some 228 laptops in the Sendai area participating and having reported hundreds of shocks off the coast, to include the few also in Nagano. My own earthquake susceptible region shows a few dozen within a 40km region that participate. Plus1 now.

NHK World http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ just mentioned an upping to 9.2 on the Richter scale where before the value had already been raised to 9.0.

To get an odd sense of the scale of the damage to the country:

Team 2ch is largely located in Japan. Their production is down by roughly 20%.
