Out of interest, I was wondering what to do with my work buffer.
Previously, I had a 9 day buffer and I reduced that down to 1. I do have a number of tasks still to finish. Should I just plough through them or abort some of them so that I have a useful buffer and can respond to high priority tasks better? |

Tolstoy said “The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.” That certainly applies to the WCG.

Finish them, aborting will lower your ability to get repairs (High Priorty) jobs |

Fred De Condappa,
----------------------------------------If you don't want repairs/high priority tasks to remain flexible at all times, then set the cache "permanently" at 2.5 days or higher. Setting the "connect every..." time to 2.5 days has the same effect, but requires to set the "Network based on preferences" activity menu option and impacts work reporting. Just to be sure on your proxy, the port 8080 was entered in the Web-Browser proxy of the screen-shots you posted or the BOINC proxy options? A Screenshot would be ideal and brand of proxy, so we can add this knowledge to the FAQ's. I'll copy that then and white-out the path past the http:// part so readers will understand where to plug the url. Pictures tell a thousand words TIA. PS, but important on this: Now to go about installing WCG on other computers at work! Plz Plz confirm that you have permission installing on the work-computers. People have got reprimanded and fired over installing BOINC without the bosses authorization. happy crunching edit: insert "permanently" [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 16, 2011 8:27:04 AM] |

Way da go Fred.
8080 is a common default html (internal) proxy port, the default used by Microsoft's ISA proxy server. However not all proxies use this port; Squid proxy server uses port 3128 by default. |

Thanks a lot guys for all the help.
----------------------------------------I am not very computer savvy and talks of proxies and the such like confuse the heck* out of me. I have a home computer and a laptop and work in a school district between 3 schools. So, my laptop stays at a school overnight and rarely comes home with me now. I set the work buffer to 5 days which means that I should be available to do high priority work and have enough buffer to crunch during long weekends etc. Hopefully a win-win situation for everybody. Point taking about installing stuff on work computers. I read up about that guy Nez and although it is an extreme example, it illustrates the point. 5000 computers is intense! A number of my co workers also leave their laptops here at school and I will ask if I can install it on them. Once I get a few to do it, I should be able to snowball it onto quite a few. slowly slowly etc. Sekerob, I will do those screenshots etc when I get a little less busy for you. The only thing I did different to the screen shot above was that I used the advanced - options - http proxy option. I ticked connect via http proxy server. I entered http://proxy...pac and put 8080 as the port and everything worked. Thanks again guys. *edited to appropriate forum language - ErikaT [Edit 1 times, last edit by ErikaT at Feb 17, 2011 12:31:17 PM] |

Fred,
----------------------------------------Thanks for the feedback. Dispense of the screenshots as you told us now what / where. There were 1 or 2 past mentions on the forum about this form of proxy, squid too [a problem piece], but not immediately remember what the outcome was or setup. Happy crunching, and do show the kids also [often more computer savvy or their elders on parents-day... you might infect a few and have them do distributed computing at home too. :) ciao and let the snowball roll. edit: The Proxy FAQ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,18585 was expanded to add the above discussed proxy form. Let us know here if anything needs correcting. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 17, 2011 7:45:11 AM] |
