I'm having troubles with the software. It won't release computer time to any other program for several minutes after I try to launch ANY other program.
When it finally does allow other programs to run, all the other programs work glacially slow. I've suspended your program from working. Now all my programs work just fine. Is this a bug that should be fixed? |

I am just guessing base on the limited information provided, but BOINC more then likely release the CPU to the other programs, however, it didn't release the memory it is using. This combine with limited memory on your system results in poor performance.
----------------------------------------If you don't believe this is what is happening, then plz give us the stats of your system along with which projects your are running. ![]() |

marlynrlewis, is this a new phenomenon, or has it been happening for a long time? Also, has anything recently changed on your set-up/configuration?
----------------------------------------I ask this, as I can see that you've contributed at least 2 years to FA@H and HPF2, as well as at least 1 year to HCC, 180 days for NRftW and 90 days for DDDT1, it seems strange that it's only now that you're seeing these symptoms. BTW, welcome to the forums ![]() ![]() |

It finally drove me crazy enough to post a question. It has been going on for some time, but especially in the last 6 months or so. Once the program finally releases the memory or computer cycles, the other programs perform fairly well. However, if I suspend all computations for the Grid, all programs work like they are supposed to, even my database of 140000+ records.
My hard drive is 698 Gig. I have 2 Gig of RAM memory I have Intel 2 Quad CPU 2.40 GHz. This is a 32 bit system. I haven't upgraded yet from Vista Business to Windows 7 (or whatever the latest software version is). Does that help? |

No need to go crazy at all.
There is always plenty of help here for the asking. I am sure your problem will be as simple as an incorrect setting or similar and will be easily fixed. You will need to post more info for the experts to diagnose. Following clipped from FAQ...... Most important when reporting problems is posting sections of the main message logs to include parts that went on before and after the lines that showed the problem. The real-time log entries show in the Messages Tab of the BOINC manager. They can be copied to the Clipboard for support forum posting by selecting the entries of interest and operating the "Copy Selection" button. For general system diagnostics we'd like to see the complete start up portion of the client log all through to where a job starts running. An example: 9/24/2008 4:02:41 PM||Starting BOINC client version 6.2.18 for windows_intelx86 9/24/2008 4:02:41 PM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops, checkpoint_debug 9/24/2008 4:02:42 PM||Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 9/24/2008 4:02:42 PM||Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 9/24/2008 4:02:42 PM||Running under account user 9/24/2008 4:02:46 PM||Processor: 4 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 7] 9/24/2008 4:02:46 PM||Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 pni mmx 9/24/2008 4:02:47 PM||OS: Microsoft Windows Vista: Home Premium x86 Editon, Service Pack 1, (06.00.6001.00) 9/24/2008 4:02:47 PM||Memory: 3.00 GB physical, 6.19 GB virtual 9/24/2008 4:02:47 PM||Disk: 290.08 GB total, 197.85 GB free 9/24/2008 4:02:47 PM||Local time is UTC +2 hours 9/24/2008 4:02:47 PM||No coprocessors 9/24/2008 4:03:25 PM|WCG|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 628290; location: home; project prefs: home 9/24/2008 4:03:25 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 29-Jul-2008 18:31:51) 9/24/2008 4:03:25 PM||Computer location: home 9/24/2008 4:03:25 PM||General prefs: using separate prefs for home 9/24/2008 4:03:26 PM||Reading preferences override file 9/24/2008 4:03:26 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 2302.32MB 9/24/2008 4:03:26 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 2916.27MB 9/24/2008 4:03:26 PM||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 9/24/2008 4:03:42 PM|WCG|Restarting task R00149_93d1dbc8f71f605b01a3818e747e65b1_02_5 using rice version 617 So get that posted marlynrlewis and you will be sorted in no time. Have a look in "Boinc Manager Preferences - Disc and memory useage - memory section".
----------------------------------------You can limit the amount of memory BOINC takes up in that section. In the Processor useage tab, at the bottom, there are options to limit the CPU useage. Usually BOINC backs off with most apps as they run, but it does happen it does not back off enough with some apps, particularly Databases with large memory needs to hold the dataset in memory. Playing around with the above options usually resolves most of the contention issues. If it doesnt, more detail on your PC as mentioned above would be needed to find out whats going on. The WCG project that uses the least amount of memory is Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2; typically around 8MB per task. If you just run this you should not have any RAM problems, but I would suggest you also run at least one other project.
HCC, HFCC, FA@H, HPF-2 typically use around 50 to 100MB per task. C4CW uses a bit more, usually about 250MB. DDDT-2 and CEP-2 usually use about 250MB to 750MB; probably the two projects to avoid given your limited RAM. PS. No point in upgrading to Win7, unless you do a fresh install of W7x64 and add more RAM. |
