biggrin Windows XP screen saver not working on one of my laptops - resolved

On my Lenovo T60, running BOINC 6.10.58, my screen saver run very intermittently. Most of the time the screen saver never comes on. Other times, it does, but does not last. I have tried using the BOINC screen saver and the standard screen savers. Tried all the adjustments and no luck.

Today, I removed all programs from my start up list and find that the screen saver in the unloaded machine works. I added the items back into the list and much to my dismay, it is the BOINCMGR/BOINCTRAY programs that appear to cause a conflict with the windows screen saver.

I have a Lenovo T61 and T42 and the screen savers work fine on them.

I did try to search for info on this in the forums but I could not find anything that seemed relevant to me.

If anyone can point me in the right direction to resolve this, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Tom

tmedve,

I can't see a good reason why BOINCMGR/BOINCTRAY would cause this, but you may wish to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it as a service and not let the manager run (Advanced -> Options -> Uncheck "Run Manager at Login)

The screen saver will stop when the screen is turned off - seperate settings (depends on Operating System) and GUI dependent.

PS. It is better to not use a screen saver; faster, less bother.

Re: Windows XP screen saver not working on one of my laptops

I have also experienced this problem at times on my home PC, Windows 7 x64 Ultimate installed. I came to the conclusion it must have something to do with other running programs that try to post something on the screen while the screen saver is running.

@skgiven As I'm sure you know, the screen saver is set to not use more than 5% CPU in standard mode. Also, the CPU usage while idle is not really 100%, so I don't think it should impact the processing, therefore it wouldn't really go "faster". I personally don't consider the screensaver a bother, but actually a good way to see the progress, while letting the app use the idle settings, but I guess that's just me.

Cheers!

Re: Windows XP screen saver not working on one of my laptops

"Without" a screensaver is a NoNo in my book, the best being the blank/empty one that can be picked, which does not use CPU cycles, but provides password security when not there (if one wants to - recommended). Also, visit the SS FAQ in the Start Here forum. The BOINC SS can be told to turn blank after X minutes - end the animation too - so it would not be using cycles. When using the WCG/BOINC SS, the CPU percent and Frames per second can be manipulated in the Website Device Profile to personal preference.

And then the security software side: Same as the BOINCMgr.exe and BOINC.exe Core Client talk to each other via RPC/Localhost which can be interfered with by Firewall/Security Suites, the BOINC SS also talks to the Core Client to track the job progress and draw a dynamic image from that. If that connection is scanned, it could lead to the observed problem, so standard I have the boincscr.exe also excluded from scanning (See FAQs).

biggrin Re: Windows XP screen saver not working on one of my laptops - SOLVED

I think I figured out what the problem is.

The Lenovo T60 has a known problem with thermal overheating. I was also having a problem with the machine shutting off while I was in the middle of working on it. A search of the web clued me into the overheating problem. I reduced the CPU usage limits on BOINC, opened the computer up and blew out the fan (nice cloud of dust). I put it back together and low and behold, not only has the machine not crashed on me, but the screen saver now works and the display power shuts off, all as it should. I think the high temperature of the CPU must have also been effecting the clock that is used by the screen saver.

This also consistent with running BOINC. If I did not run it as I originally tried, then there was no "extra" heat, so everything worked.

Not happy with this situation, but when you buy a used computer.........

So if you have strange behavior like this, try to reduce the CPU temperature. Reduce usage and/or clean fans and heatsinks. I hope this can help someone else.
