Hi, I finally decided to emerge from the shadows and introduce myself as i have kept an eye on the conversation and stats pretty often for some time. I have been crunching for quite some time with various computers. Now I'm using two AMD Phenom II x4 965 desktops, which i had at the end of last year. They both have identical key components (motherboard, CPU, memory) but one is running win7 and another one Ubuntu 10.10. I'm also crushing with two dual core laptops which are actually used for work but it seems such a waste not to use their processors. Great to hear from you Finman! Interesting. Very interesting. I was wondering, you have two identical machines with different operating systems. It got me curious. Do you run the same WCG Science project on both? If you do, do you compare the throughput? Where are you located? USA? I'm from Finland. Well yes i run same projects on both but as they are both running pretty much everything and the linux one seems to get mainly tasks from clean energy project and the windows one more evenly from everything it is not 100% sure but there is quite a big difference with their points so far. Win7 0:263:09:46:03 958,151 1,663 Linux 0:256:22:25:38 1,198,714 1,750 The linux is used for television, recordings (both with vdr) and watching dvds (like that would really require four cores), but is nice that i can transcode dvd into high quality h.264 movie in just an hour. There is also apache web server running on this. The win7 is mainly used by my wife for email, word and photo indexing/sorting so it should be under lighter use as it just idles for most of time. But sure i could set them both to same wcg project and see how big difference there is. Any ideas on which project would work the best? Hum... it seems like it might not be a good test since you run such divergent workloads on the two machines. Still your points totals seem to indicate that even with a bigger load on the Ubuntu machine produces more points (presumably that is a measure of contribution). The only way you could get a good comparison would be to run the EXACT same workload on them for some period of time and then make the comparision for that time period. That all turns into a hassle and would inconvience you as well as your wife I suspect along with being complicated. It was just a passing thought. Thanks for showing interest. Have a great day...I never visited Finland...closest I got was Oslo and I headed south as soon as I could (Us old Texas boys like it warm). ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Jan 29, 2011 9:51:18 PM] |

Hi Keith, et all,
Just a report on my crunching activities. When I checked to see how many WUs I have for DDDT2, since DDDT2 is all I am processing at this time, I have 1120 total WUS. Of these - 786 are Valid - 139 are Pending Validation - 190 are In Progress - 2 are Error - 1 is Inconclusive - 3 are Aborted by server The PVs have been increasing daily, but many of these will disappear starting tomorrow since the wingmen will get a No Reply response. This should mean I will see a sudden jump in all categories (time, points, and results) which may help me get to 1000 points sooner. [ot] The remodel work on my house is coming along very well. The next thing to happen is to pour concrete for the garage and one storage room. The concrete has already been poured for the larger storage and most of the retaining walls. It is fascinating to watch the work progress. My wife talked to the contractor and he said this is the largest project he has been involved with.[/ot] ![]() |

DKT - Could you tell us what the average run time is that you're seeing for DDDT2, since you have a statistically significant sample size? As I was musing earlier, I wonder if we could beat the team one day results record if everyone crunched DDDT2 for a few days ... provided that the WUs are plentiful enough.
As for your "off-topic": it's completely within bounds here. Hope your remodel goes well. I've heard so many horror stories with remodels. - D |

I didn't realize there would be so much interest in the remodel work I am having done. The original house had 1300 sq ft of living space and my wife has been collecting various things over the past 30+ years. As a result we had to rent storage in Prunedale. While it is close, I am paying over $200 a month for this storage and part of the house is still being used for storage.
The people I hired to do the remodel did the design and drawings and submitted them to the county for a building permit. These changes included completely removing the original garage and building a new garage and storage room at the back side of the house. A second storage room is being built where the original garage was with a great room, pantry, and clothing wash room on top of that storage. A sun room is being added which will be on top of the storage room at the back of the house. A new concrete driveway is being built to go around the house to the new garage in back. The plywood siding will be covered with stucco plaster and the windows replaced with dual pane windows. It is kind of hard to picture how this might be done without knowing our property is two and a half acres on a hillside, and the front of the house is on the up hill side and the back on the down hill side. The back of the house faces south and not too much dirt had to be excavated for the garage and storage room. Most of the excavation had to be done at the end of the house where the original garage was located. I don't know if there are any questions, and our cat keeps intruding making it difficult to type. Lynda, my wife, takes pictures every day when any work is being done. Today it is raining, but there is still quite a bit of concrete to put down. |
