I was just looking for this one, I have the same issue. I am using BOINC on a Intel dual-core 2.7/8 Ghz 2 GB DDR2 system. on Debian Squeeze.
This is how my preferences are :- Giving arbitary values within [ ] Processor usage tab :- 1. Computer in use is clicked 2. Only when computer has been idle for [2] minutes 3. While processor usage is less than [25] oercent Other Options :- Switch between applications every [240.00] minutes - I don't know from where this value came from and what does it mean/stand for ? On Multiprocessor systems use at most [50.00] percent of the processors Use at most [50.00] % of cpu time. Now the disk and Memory tab :- Disk usage :- Use at most [20] Gigabytes of space - don't know if this much is needed but I can afford atm . Leave at most [2] Gigabytes disk space free Use at most [20] % of total disk space Use at most [50]% of page file swap Memory usage :- Use at most [40.00] % when computer is in use Use at most [70.00]% when computer is idle Now one more query/question alongwith the above - the diskspace where does it take from , from / or /home ? Also the device profile at WCG is at default so it should take stuff from my preferences, right ? |

Hello shirish,
Switch between applications every [240.00] minutes - I don't know from where this value came from and what does it mean/stand for ? This means that if you are signed up for WCG and another project (such as Rosetta@Home) then you will switch between WCG and R@H every 4 hours. If you only run WCG projects, this will have no effect. On Multiprocessor systems use at most [50.00] percent of the processors Use at most [50.00] % of cpu time. This means you will run 1 project on 1 core. It will run for 1 second, then pause for 1 second. This is so restrictive that the following rule seems unnecessary: 3. While processor usage is less than [25] percent Personally, I would not be bothered by 90% or 100% cpu usage, since the project thread is lowest priority and is preempted by any other program. Now one more query/question alongwith the above - the diskspace where does it take from , from / or /home ? I don't know where Linux stores BOINC data. Somebody running Linux will have to answer that, but 10 GB is more than even a quad-core running full out can use. Also the device profile at WCG is at default so it should take stuff from my preferences, right ? Yes. If you read the Messages tab after a reboot, it does not tell you all your preferences but it does tell you where they are located. Lawrence |

Lawrence On Ubuntu Linux, if you install BOINC from the repository so it runs automatically when you turn on your computer, then the data is in a subdirectory of /var/lib/boinc-client. If you download BOINC and install it manually yourself, then you decide where it resides. ![]() |
