Hello,
----------------------------------------I would like to use less than 50% of the processor when it is running. I have change several times the value of the option : "On multiprocessor systems, use at most" (40 %,10%, 0.5%) of the processors. Whatever I set in this value (inferior to 50%), the workunit still using 50% of the processor. My CPU is a Core 2 Duo T7500. For others option values are : Use at most 100% CPU time Best Regards, Wilgard ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Wilgard at Dec 16, 2010 2:44:19 PM] |

Your processor has two physical cores and two threads. This is one thread per core. I am not sure if you can with this option manage load more finely at core level. Over 50% it would use both cores under 50% it uses only one.
----------------------------------------If you have 4 cores then it is by 25% step. If your 4 core is HT type then you have 8 threads. The step would be then 12.5%. Again I am not completely sure if this options really works like that. ![]() |

In Windows when it shows 50% of 1 task on a Duo is equal 100% (or whatever cycle% is spare) of 1 core.... on Linux 100% is shown if 100% is used of 1 core. Anyway to clarify, do you want BOINC to use only a portion (1/2) of the CPU cores or do you want it to use 50% 'per' core, e.g. to lower the operating temperature, which is controlled with the "Use at most 100% CPU time"? If you see only 1 task running in Tasks Manager and in BOINC tasks view then you've already achieved your goal. Of course, the activity menu setting needs setting to "Run based on preferences", as else BOINC with Run Always and will go 100% full out. BUT, in experimenting, the number of cores/% entered is what BOINC uses regardless if running based on preferences. Only the % time is influenced by this option. I've also experimented with the % of processor to less than 50% on the duo. BOINC will then ignore and use the minimum possible i.e. 10% will still use 50% of the cores on a duo. Let us know.

On a dual core CPU, anything up to 99% will mean you use 50% of the CPU’s.
----------------------------------------To use less than this you can set the Use at most % CPU time. If you want to use 25% of the CPU for Boinc then set Use at most 50% CPU time; 50% of 50% = 25% overall. Note that this will spike in Task Manager between 0 and 50% CPU usage, but on average you will use 25% CPU. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Dec 16, 2010 1:11:45 PM] |

I have the wcg task which is at 50% all the time and the idl task to 50%.
----------------------------------------I would like to have the wcg task at 25% all the time, because the fan run too fast. But as you said the only way is to have Use at most 50% CPU time and On multiprocessor systems, use at most 50% of the processors. I will have 50% of 50% = 25%. Thanks a lot for you help. For better balance, 25% of CPU time overall and 100% of processors. This way 2 jobs concurrent use 1/4 of each core. Of course 2 jobs concurrent uses more memory, but unless running CEP2 that is generally not a concern.
----------------------------------------As I just mentioned in other thread, if temperature is the issue, set both back to 100% and install TThrottle BOINC tool and set the ceiling temps to where your fans don't bother you, yet maximize BOINC computing time when it's cooler, at night :D Of course, with laptops particularly... visit the Dust Bunny Thread in the Chat Room. You'll be amazed at what a little brushing does to system temps and fan noise... clean fans make less noise too. --//--
