[RESOLVED] Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

Dear griders,

A friend of mine has juste installed the BOINC software with the WCG projects.

She's having trouble because when she has a calculus at 99%, after it's going to 0% and no results are sent, no point are earned. On her stats, it's written that she has no points, no time of computing, nothing !

Firstable, she had messages telling CPU usage was to high, she now has enhanced the CPU limit usage.

Could it be linked ? Is there a setting she needs to do ?

Thank you all

Re: Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

First thing for them to do is go to their messages tab and copy all messages and paste them here in the forums.

Chances are, they did return the result. Stats are only updated twice a day. Also, stats only get incremented IF the result returned is valid.

Also, have them take a look at this page. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do

Thanks,

Re: Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

The CPU usage being too high sounds like the setting under preferences. Have them go to the advanced view. Click on Advanced and then Preferences. Then on the processor usage tab change the "While processor usage is less than ___ percent"...change that number to 0. By default BOINC now has it set at 25% which is waaaaaay too low for most users. 0 turns this feature off.

Edit: edited for punctuation.
Edit2: Yes it could be possible. I would also suggest to make sure the option under disk and memory usage to leave applications in memory to be checked.

Re: Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

Thanks for reply,

She just gave me a screen of her software with the message.

I told her to wait for new results, maybe it's a question of time.
When she clicks on the link you gave, she has 0 everywhere.

I remember when I started to join BOINC that I used to have the same troubles but I can't remember how I fixed it.

Thank you for your help, if you have an idea. Else, I tell her to wait if there will be an evolution.

I keep you informed.

What's her member name?

Also, when she shows the messages, there is a button "copy all", have her click that. Then in an email to you, paste the text into the email.

The information in the screen shot isn't enough.

Thanks,

Re: Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

Since this is a laptop, I would recommend disabling the CPU load balancing as I described above. Instead, if you are wanting to limit the amount of CPU usage, just tell BOINC to use at most 50% of the CPU. You wont get the CPU usage is too high message and it wont keep shutting down BOINC like that. As well, it will run all the time and the CPU wont get too hot. I run my laptops around 60% for this reason. Most laptops are not run 24/7 and the ones that do generate a lot of heat. See if this option corrects her problems and if it opens up the resources she needs.

Re: Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

Looking at the logs, she did upload a result HFCC_L3_01269545_L3_0001_0

The result has not shown up in the results status page yet because her agent has not reported it. There are two steps that happen once a result is completed.
1. It upload the files to the server
2. When the agent polls for more work it also registers with the servers that work has completed. This step has not happened. (Ready to Report)

To force it, put he agent into advanced mode. Click on the projects tab. Select World Community Grid and press the update button on the left. This should Report the work and appear in the results status page within a few minutes.

Hope this helps,

-Uplinger

Re: Calculus goes from 99% to 0%

She used the solution proposed by uplinger and it's working, she has points, 2 studies validated.

By the way, her user name is elo59650.

We are going to wait for a finished project, if the problem of 99%=>0% is still present, I will tell you.

Otherwise, I will put the topic as [Resolved].

Thank you once again for your support and good computing to you !
