I have noticed that with CEP Phase 2 WUs on XP X64 that everytime I shut down my computer and restart it, the progress for the WUs resets back to 0. So I tried simply exiting BOINC mgr and restarting it and the same thing happened, i.e., progress on each WU I have for CEP Phase 2 reset to 0. I am also running CEP Phase 2 on a Linux machine and another XP X64 machine, but I do not know whether the same thing happens on those machines. I have overridden the "minimum" requirements for CEP Phase 2.
----------------------------------------Is this normal behavior in that somehow it loses track of true progress and is actually further along that it looks, or is this a bug? My apologies if this topic has been covered before. Thanks in advance ![]() |

Hello Wiyosaya,
Some people have reported that checkpoints in CEP2 can be more than 4 hours apart. From my point of view, this is a serious problem. The project scientists say that this is a quirk of the algorithm, to be endured rather than cured. Be sure that Leave Application in Memory is selected in your profile under My Grid - Device Manager and try not to reboot very often. If rebooting is part of normal operation, consider deselecting CEP2. There are many worthwhile projects with short checkpoints. Lawrence |

Just to observe that in my experience crunching CEP2 under Windows Seven 64 and Windows 2008 Server, when selected the "Leave Application in Memory" option in any device profiles, need have the RAM memory quantity enough to support it (read the minimum requirements of CEP2 project to have an idea, but I suggest have at least 1GB per core available in your machine, including HT if applicable). It will allow you use the "Leave Application in Memory" as an advantage when processing CEP2. Good luck.

Same problem with CEP2 on my Win7 x64 and XP x86 - happens every time, no matter how I try to avoid it. Now I reboot only if absolutely necessairy or when a WU is in the very beginning to minimize the lost CPU work.

Wiyosaya, can you post the result log for one of your results that went back to zero.
Thanks, armstrdj |

You can use the hibernation function as an alternative to shutting down the computer. Then there should be no lost of computation time.

Does the link to the result that i posted to the web site include the result log? If so, I will post that for one of the current work units.

Hello Wiyosaya,
1) There is no link in this thread that I can see. 2) Links to My Grid do not work except for the owner. This is a security precaution. You have to post the messages rather than linking to them. Lawrence |

You have to post the messages rather than linking to them. Lawrence Well, I was going to do this, however, the results appear to have disappeared from the results status queue already. The work units were... E200701_578_A.27.C21H12N2OS3.578.4.set1d06_0 E200705_311_A.27.C21H12N2OS3.708.0.set1d06_0 E200706_417_A.27.C21H13N3OS2.81.0.set1d06_1 I have been hibernating the machine on which it appears to happen, and the reset to start no longer happens. My apologies for not getting back to this sooner. ![]() |

Wiyosaya,
----------------------------------------Hibernating is a good way to have a task resume at the exact point it was computing before. Restarting a computer, the way how and the moment in the calculations can make a big difference, particular with CEP2 on not fast computers... the 4 hours mentioned by Lawrence and more (seen near 6 hours on my duo). Get BOINCTasks utility and it will tell real time when the last checkpoint was so you can decide whether it's the opportune time. As for hibernating, I'm used to just close the lid on the laptop. Some prefer to snooze/pause BOINC first, but if they forget at powerup to take off the snooze/pause, the client will wait to resume with calculations for 1 full hour or until the suspend is taken off in the activity menu. cheers
