"need"
If you are not having problems then you do not "need" to upgrade Boinc. If it's woth doing you might want to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 then install the latest Boinc version. |

Hi Barak,
----------------------------------------For me the easiest way to upgrade BOINC on Ubuntu 10.04 is to use the Update Manager. Upgrade to 6.10.58 can be done by doing the following: 1) Click System->Administration->Software Sources 2) Select the "Other Software" tab 3) Click the +Add button near the bottom left 4) In the APT line: type ppa: pkg-boinc/ppa 5) If you type it correctly the +Add Source button will enable: click it 6) You should then see: http://ppa.launchpad.net/pkg-boinc/ppa/ubuntu lucid main in the Other Software links. Make sure the box at the beginning of the line is checked. 7) Click the Close button 8) Click System->Administration->Update Manager 9) If you don't see the BOINC update in the package list click the Check button 6.10.58 should now be listed so click the Install Updates button I am also new to Linux. I’ve found Google and the thread Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt. by Sekerob (where I found the link to the ppa) to be very helpful in learning my way around. Enough that I’m now up to 5 machines and working on moving the rest over. Bill P Edit: added Sekerob thread link

6.10.17 is the latest official release for linux on WCG. Unless that page is not up to date. The DOWNLOAD tab lists 6.10.58 as the current release for Windows, Linux and Mac. Not sure what you're seeing? Bill P

Looking at your instructions above to update, can this be done in the middle of crunching or should I complete what I have first, upload, then do the update? I hate fixing something that's not broken but is there a real good reason to update to this new version?

Looking at your instructions above to update, can this be done in the middle of crunching or should I complete what I have first, upload, then do the update? I hate fixing something that's not broken but is there a real good reason to update to this new version? The update can be done in the middle of crunching, although I wouldn't because of personal preference. I would allow no new tasks, wait until in progress were completed, do a manual update to report, shut down Boinc client (sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client stop), do the update and then start Boinc client (sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start) then allow new tasks. As for is there a good reason? I don't know of any other than being at the WCG recommended level. I had 4 devices running at 6.2.28 until last week and they were working fine. As you wrote, why fix it if it's not broke? My response was to the question of how, not a recommendation to do so. Good luck. Bill P
