Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

Which ATI card(s) do you have?

I would suggest a fresh install rather than an upgrade to 10.10.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

Ati 5670 HD. If I reinstall, will I end up with duplicate files of ubuntu or will the files be wiped and fresh install? I have to figure out the memory problem first. Tnks

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

During a reinstall, you will be asked whether you want to overwrite the existing operating system or install beside it.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

Thanks. Ran testmem that comes with ubuntu. Not sure why but my all 12gb of ram is back. I did shut down, killed the power at the psu. Fired it up in win7 first, then ran the memtest, then fired up ubuntu. Working fine. Starting to wonder if the memory got hot enough to do this. Wish there was an app to monitor temps on a super micro board. Lm-sensors doesn't work due to ipmi on this board. Will definitely reinstall after I empty boinc and go from there. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

my 980x has 12 gigs but i only see 8 when i dial up beyond 1833 mhz

1 chip is less integrally situated than the other(s)

chips are sold on a heat rating, some like mine won't go far from the reference before POST failure.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

On many motherboards there are at least 2 RAM slots that clock higher than the others. It will usually tell you in the manual which slots support overclocking for RAM modules with higher frequencies, and what frequencies they can support.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

In researching this found a reference to "cputime" Linux app and installed it and low behold, it's able to control the amount of CPU time given to a specific PID, a crude form of what Threadmaster GUI can do for windows crunchers on a per science application basis. Regrettably, even when the parent was assigned the lower %, the child-processes did not inherit the % **, else with some scripting it might have worked to set CEP2 to a lower rate and then the disk IO maybe better able to keep up :>)

Anyway found on review that DDDT2+CEP2 allowed latter to achieve 98%+ at full throttle, so no need to restrain at "one at the time" profile setting on my 4+ year old clunker.

edit: ** practically it would have to be set with each of the 16 jobs in a CEP2 task.

It didnt ask. Just asked to install. Did it. Upon reboot, i noticed i now have 2 versions of the clean 10.4, plus the latest update. Think its .32. So how to remove all and start over without nuking my win7 install. Am using the cd i made of 10.4.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

Get ahold of Ubuntu Tweak, but think there's more ways to skin that cat. You decide which one you'd like to keep... which I wait to do until happy that CEP2 remains to run fine. Compared to a Windows install, the Ubuntu's are peanuts in disk space. Then use Grub Customizer or BURG to spice up that boot up menu.

Re: Ubuntu throttling CPU's

Thanks sek. As always, your on top of these things. You would think the install cd would have recognized ubuntu being installed already. Coming from mac OS, am really liking ubuntu. Time for me to roll up the sleeves and learn terminal and such if i plan on staying. Mac OS is great but cant afford the mac pros anymore. Jobs and company are turning into Microsoft and the greed is setting in. Allot cheaper to build my multicore machines. biggrin
