Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

Band on the run... don't think few need my help spotting this

9/11/2010 6:38:59 PM Memory: 3.94 GB physical, 7.87 GB virtual
29/11/2010 6:38:59 PM Disk: 443.66 GB total, 100.28 GB free

versus

29/11/2010 6:39:00 PM max memory usage when active: 120.93MB
29/11/2010 6:39:00 PM max memory usage when idle: 806.17MB

and why jobs keep loading and turning "waiting for memory"

Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

In Boinc Manager, Advanced Tab, go to preferences and change -

In processor usage tab, set "While Processor usage less" set to zero
In disc & MeMory tabe, set "Use at most 50% when computer in use", and "Use at most 100% when not in use" which is what mine is set to.....

Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

OK, I did the two changes. But, I don't see how that helps me to reduce the number of jobs running - I now have 8 running concurrently and 5 waiting to run.

The machine is running hard and I don't think it is supposed to run at this level constantly. Why doesn't my XP machine queue up 13 jobs? It has only ever done 2+2 waiting.

It's a mystery to me and I'm having trouble understanding what's going on.

Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

One last step now that we know it's an 8 core device.

29/11/2010 6:38:59 PM Processor: 8 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz [Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5]

Go into the Local Preferences > Processor Usage tab and somewhere at bottom there is "On Multiprocessor systems use at most 100%". Each 12.5% reduction of that value is 1 job less concurrent, so if you only want to run 2 jobs same time set the field to 25%. It's rounded down to the nearest whole core, so

24 percent will make it 1 job
49 percent will make it 3.
74 percent will make it 5.
99 percent will make it 7.

Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

Terry, you have an i7-720 CPU. The CPU has 4 cores and uses Hyper Threading (HT), so it appears to have 8 cores (really threads) and is capable of running 8 WCG tasks at a time. After you reduce the number of threads used (for example, use at most 50% CPU) Boinc will reduce your cache, but existing queued tasks will remain until they are crunched.

Your system may be running hot and noisy because Turbo Boost is on. While that CPU has a frequency of 1.6GHz, with Turbo the Frequency can rise to 2.8 GHz. So as an alternative, you could just turn Turbo off. You can use a free tool called CPUZ to look at actual live frequencies and temperature of the CPU,

Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

Like I said before, you could limit the cores or just limit the amount of CPU time BOINC gets. You can play with those settings or ask people what would be most beneficial while at the same time not hindering your performance and burning up your system. Also, when deciding on how many cores you use, keep in mind how much memory each project you support needs because you have 4GB divided by 8 threads and an additional 8GB Virtual (typically off of the hard drive) as well. That means running 4 CEP2 WU's at the same time will cause a tremendous amount of read/writes to the hard drive. This will strain your hard drive and create a additional heat.

Re: Large number of tasks queueing up and running

OK you lot, I think I'm getting it. Not all of it, mind you, but enough to start amending preferences.

I didn't know Turbo was on this laptop - it's on my N200 Notebook but I haven't seen it pop up here. I've got a Toshiba PC Health system onboard and I can check that to see how things are progressing.,

Thanks for all the help.
