WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

Hi,

I've been running WCG 5.10.30 on my T61P with no problems. I just got a new W510 and I'm having trouble getting WCG 6.10.58 to run.

I'm connected via a LAN/ethernet cable from my wall. WCG - BOINC Manager appears in the bottom right (I guess that's the "system tray"). When I hover over it, it says "Computation is Suspended.".

I wish I could figure out a way to post my Preferences. This is what I have:

Checkmarks for "While computer is on batteries", "While computer is in use", and "Use GPU while computer is in use".

The value for "Only after computer has been idle for" is 3.00 minutes, but it is very light - it is not highlighted and I can't overtype the value.

The value for "While processor usage is less than" is 0.

The value for "Every day between hours of" is 00:00 and 00:00.

I have no day-of-week overrides.

My "Other options" values are: 120.00, 100.00, 60.00.

Any idea how I can get WCG to run?

Re: WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

Hi,

plz open the BOINC Manager in Advanced View and look in the Activity menu. Which run option is selected there?

If lights don't come on after that visit, plz copy and paste the content from the message tab from all the way up top through where operations show to be suspended in your next post.

ttyl.

Re: WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

Run based on preferences, Use GPU based on preferences and Network activity based on preferences all have black dots next to them. The first and third values match my T61P settings. The version on my T61P doesn't have "GPU".

By the way, I have since re-booted wirelessly and my WCG/BOINC icon in the system tray says "8 tasks running". Apparently this problem only occurs when I am hard-wired to the network.

I will re-boot wirelessly after lunch and post the messages as per your request.

Thanks for your help!

I just shudown, re-connected my lan cable so as not to be wireless and re-booted. "Computation is suspended" occurs once again. These are all the messages:

Re: WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

Rich,

Seeing nothing in your log but the default startup suspend for 120 seconds (used to be 60 seconds), so as to allow other applications to fire up before crunching starts:

12/1/2010 1:30:33 PM Suspending computation - initial delay
12/1/2010 1:32:32 PM World Community Grid Restarting task faah17333_ZINC05352766_EN1md02420CTP_00_0 using faah version 607

12/1/2010 1:32:33 PM World Community Grid Restarting task HFCC_L3_01026844_L3_0001_0 using hfcc version 611
12/1/2010 1:32:33 PM World Community Grid Restarting task HFCC_L3_01026637_L3_0001_0 using hfcc version 611

Two things you can do to get into the comfort zone:

1. In the Activity Menu set all processing and networking to Always.
2. Do Alt-Shft-Esc to open the Task Manager and find processes that start with WCGxxx

Are any of them using CPU time? Think you have to look in XP too with admin rights if the client is installed as a service/daemon ... don't recognize the log entry for that momentarily but per my log it looks like this:

01-Dec-2010 00:22:55 [---] Running as a daemon

).

Really like to see the log where it saus that Computation was suspended and what the reason is such as time of day, user input, processor use over X percent, short of memory... something.

Since your messages indicate you've got local preferences in place, the override entry,

12/1/2010 1:00:03 PM Reading preferences override file

you could post a copy of the global_prefs_override.xml which you find here per your log:

12/1/2010 1:00:00 PM Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC

Let us know.

Re: WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

I decided to uninstall and start over. My wife started this migration for me because she went through it 2 weeks ago. She installed WCG from someplace other than ISSI.

I just uninstalled the WCG that I had and installed the WCG from ISSI. That matches what's on my (soon to be recycled) T61P.

I followed the HELP to Detach WCG/IBM and tried to add my member name. Tools, Attach to Project appears, but only lightly and I can't select it. Tools, Attach to Account Manager appears - but that's not what the Help mentioned.

Nothing now appears in Projects. How can I add my member name (RichVeith) as the ACCOUNT on the Projects tab?

UPDATE: Found this:
If in step 4 the option ‘Attach to project…’ is greyed out and you are unable to select it, then you need to open the file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC using an application such as Notepad. Once you open this file you will see a line that looks like:

<disallow_attach>1</disallow_attach>

Change this line so that it looks like:

<disallow_attach>0</disallow_attach>

Now save the file. Go ahead and close the World Community Grid – BOINC software by selecting File -> Exit. You can start it again by going to Start -> Programs -> World Community Grid – BOINC Agent -> World Community Grid – BOINC Manager. You can now complete step 4 above.

But my ALLUSERS doesn't have an Application Data folder. And a search for BOINC doesn't find anything. Even though WCG/BOINC is in my System Tray.

Any final suggestions???

I hate to say this, but I think I'm going to have to stop running WCG. I had to give up donating blood because a lab made a false positive error. I'll have to give up WCG since IBM can't find a way to migrate it from my T61 to my W510.

Think if you send a mail to "Contact Us" (link at bottom of WCG home page) f.a.o. TKH or ErikaT you'll be handled with all care to include prevention of you going anemic on the topic of crunching. Can't allow that :-)

Re: WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

The Help wasn't exact, but it was close enough such that after some perseverance (well, Too Much perseverance) I got things ALMOST working.

My account now appears and the work is running BUT:

At boot-up time, I get a popup window with this message:

"This application has failed to start because libcurl.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I also have an empty DOS window (command prompt) open.

I've already re-installed things after this message. But it didn't go away.

libcurl.dll is in my BOINC folder. 7.18.0.0. Any idea how to get rid of the message and window? I'm not going to re-install a third time - especially since the file is already there.

And I certainly can't be bothered with having to close the error box and the DOS prompt each morning.

Re: WCG on new laptop won't run - Computation is Suspended.

After much grief, I ran AdAware and it found four (4!) trojan horses on my brand new W510 laptop. Needless to say, I'm returning it and figuring that is the cause of all my BOINC problems.
Thanks for your help.
I'm done following this forum since my problem will be shipped back to whence it came. But I sure do wish this forum was in the same place as the "regular" IBM forums so that I could follow it like I do all the other forums that interest me.
Thanks again.
Good bye.
