smile beta solved some sagas

Seasons greetings in advance to everyone.

Just wanted to say things picked up going across to boinc beta
because current stable had some annyoing issues.

The main cross platform one for me was the switch task ** seconds.

This thing had to be tricked depending on the OS to either be zero and if that didn't work 9999999.99.

Otherwise the result would be say a weeks worth of packets all done
willy nilly and on slower machines may risk missing deadline in some cases?

Well it was a pain for me i just want it to be working on what it's assigned whilst i can understand the sense in switching to keep the cpu on it's toes but conversly i see it as a way to trip up.

Thankfully in beta this does not seem to be an issue feature removed?

I've lost a heap of packets due to stable on i think all platforms having a nervous breakdown at some stage.

This becomes aparent when it just starts smashing into packets
either errors immediatly on impact or waits till whenever usually completion to say.

Congratulations bad computation please bang head on table now!

But i take that as run of the mill because no ones real phased so neither am i rather than try log all the duds pfft jetison and go.

It seems every project cops a bad run and my guess is not much can be done.

What i try and have done is keep an eye on if i have upset the os in question by to much tinkering.

File corruption can spread far and wide and just loves me :P

If things aren't adding up eg networking or whatever driver is beyond hope i war chalk for re install.

Rather than try gnit pick it's easier for me to re install i don't advise that in most cases because it's all to easy to forget to back something up crucial.

Oh now i remember what the other thing was still no show graphics in linux stays greyed.

If it's due to x windows fair enough because of obvious reasons security being the main one i think?

But overall much happier with the beta especially on linux seems easier to install and use than the suse rpm.

Topstuff.

Re: beta solved some sagas

Hi vco.bs

There's something in the Season Greetings water this year :D. What "beta" version are you talking about? Not a good idea to declare an Alpha Testing client if meaning 6.12.6 as "beta" or as is printed very clearly in red (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING) . It's more buggy then you'll imagine, but over at Berkeley they're absolutely dead set on pushing this into a "recommended" state even before doing a formal Beta test announcement and let it run in a wider "not afraid to try" environment (and then on the Berkeley forum the mods tell that the developers do not read their own forum and if you please join the alpha mailing list). devilish

As for your switching... tricking it into zero seconds lets BOINC default back to 60 minutes... it's hard-coded and 9999999 minutes will cause a client to always run in high priority state on all packets, and thus probably you wont receive any work in cache. I've just tried it and sure enough EDF panic state kicked in and when all cores run in High Priority, work fetch stops until a thread starts idling. Setting the "connect every..." to 0.00 days and the additional buffer to 0.01 achieves same thing... letting tasks finish in one run if only crunching for WCG.

The graphics... well either you have the Linux graphics set up or not. If not, then the button to watch graphics is grayed out as you found. Given that you've got no graphics, could as well run with the stable 5.10.45 release. The Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) parts added since 6.10 have introduced allot of quirky scheduler behavior... maybe that's what you've been experiencing with 6.10.58, if that was your previous last version.

Don't change what's not broken and when working for you, it is likely still broken for someone else. It is, which is why WCG is very slow in adopting new versions. The last 5.10 was .45, last 6.10 was .58 and for 6.12... well, think they already seeded 6.13 so this 6.12 smells as an intermediary to get that "notifier" window out and upset many experienced users who'll find that the message tab has gone missing and get fixes in place for the GPU video card crunchers.

a 2 cent opine :D

Happy crunching though :-)

EDIT:

PS, don't misunderstand, we always need volunteers who venture into new territory and test development releases, but it's a bit early to advertise on this production grid.

thx

Re: beta solved some sagas

Thank you Sekerob sorry i didn't get back here sooner i have enough trouble figuring out my way around the forum ;-)

All points taken on board and you have explained a number of things that still baffled me until now.

Those reading my other posts and this one sorry for the clear lack of logic on my behalf but as you can see i'm clearly here for the fun of it.

The fact i am doing something usefull to society makes it worth while i will re read things juat to see if i missed anything but it explains the sometimes random hopping around of things that switching after being a doozy and yeh the high priority and other things was coming up at times and ding dong.

Anyway no offense taken i am also here to be a crash test dummy for the beta program things just seemed to behave better for me so yes good point to those reading betas are not adviseable.

If it falls on it's head and you lose a bunch of packets there will be no shed tears.

Seeing as i do that a stack anyway took a while to get OC right on the one machine worth doing it to learning the beast basicly whilst the clyde stales kept at it stock.

Boinc 6.12.5 is what i've been taking down to the test track and scraping the sides at high velocity.

Oh no this is starting to sound like one of those stupid car shows.

All right on that note i shall depart and shamelessly say to all the mad hatters and infidels JoIN mY TeAm.

Oh and don't mind my crappy homepage Website Overhaul will borrow it for a week and magicly transform it into a crazy cane toad or was that frog i can't remember :P Hoorooo.
