I am a returning contributor. When I download BOINC I get the error 1321. How can I get around this error?

Re: error 1321

Hello Stan Cook,

I am puzzled. I have never run into error 1321, nor can I find any posts about it. Just where do you get error 1321. Does it happen during the download? Does it happen during the Install. At which point, precisely.

I assume that you do not have BOINC installed on your computer yet.

Re: error 1321

Error 1321 is a Windows system error message, usually means an installer or a process is trying to modify a file/directory/create or delete a file, and cant because it does not have the required permissions. So far so good - the rest below someone needs to check me out on it, because I'm not certain I'm right in terms of the suggested solution at the end ......

If this happens when firing off the BOINC installer, its likely that the logical user live at the time it was fired up does not have the permission level to change whatever is falling over. Its possible that right clicking the boinc exe file and selecting "run as administrator" may resolve it.

If that does not work and a reload of the boinc install file and trying again does not resolve it, its possible that resorting to using "subinacl.exe" which is a resource kit file might be needed. The MS Tech Support for this is at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265360. Whilst I have seen this used, I do not have the in depth knowledge to be sure its applicable to this particular BOINC installer problem, however hopefully someone reading this has.

Regards
Zy

Re: error 1321

I am trying to install BOINC.exe. When I select download the installer displays a World Community Grid InstallShield Wizard screen with "computing space requirements" then a World Community Grid Installer Information screen appears with this information: Error 1321. The installer has insufficient privaleges to modify the file C:\Program Files\BOINC\skins\World Community Grid\skins.xml. The installation stops here.

Re: error 1321

Hi Stan,

This is the second time this particular path / file is being mentioned on these forums as a source of fail. Can't remember the solution, but probably the road forward is to uninstall BOINC via the Windows Programs config panel (no Windows version info in OP), delete old BOINC program content and all its files and run MS Cleanup (get it from the MS website). Then try to run the installer again.
