Checkpointing

The checkpointing times appear to be very long ( in the order of 4 hours) which is orders of magnitude longer than any of the other projects I have seen.

After having had to reboot my system ( unrelated to CEP2) several times and dropping a large number of compute hours, and being required to set save on hibernate, the checkpoint policy appears to be detrimental to the majority of users and therefore the project.

How about a somewhat more frequent checkpointing policy ?

Re: Checkpointing

Hi markhack,

If it could be done it would have been done, but as you surely have seen in the forum discussions, the amount of disk IO the model does makes this absolutely prohibitive, surely rendering systems near useless while crunching.

thanks and happy crunching.

PS, can you please delete the duplicate post of this.

Re: Checkpointing

Hi markhack,

A point that Sekerob hasn't touched on in his post, is that CEP2 IS an 'Opt-In' project - and thus, the majority of users (i.e., the 'Set and forget' crunchers) won't come across these long checkpointing issues as they simply wouldn't get any WU's for this project.

Hopefully, there are enough "heavy-weight" crunchers out there who are seeking a high badge level, that this project won't last too long and thus the issue will resolve itself.

BTW, a way around this issue (if you know you're going to need to reboot your machine in the next 12 hours), is to run a mix of CEP2 and other projects - that way, the CEP2 WU's can be suspended before they start, allowing other project WU's be crunched (with their much shorter checkpointing times), until your machine is back up and running again for a long period. I had to use this method earlier on this week, as I had some Microsoft updates to install.

Re: Checkpointing

Thanks for the hint. I will suspend before reboots.
