Hey Chris. Who does not want a machine like that? How much memory did it have? Seems like a terrible waste to have a 32bit Opsys on it, since I would guess it has 8GB of memory or more and is now using less than 3 (IFRC). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It had 16 GB. You are correct, only 3 GB was available to use, though. The server was designed to be a database server, and it's going to be running a program called Aloha. That's a program for cash registers and there are only going to be 4 cash registers connected to this thing. The version of Aloha that we received will only run on 32-bit operating systems (sigh). Wow... Talk about using a sledge hammer to swat a fly! It sounds like a P4 could handle that just fine - even a dual core. It would be great if you could talk them into letting some number of WCG tasks run in the background but it sounds like you have already been down that road. ![]() unfortunately, it won't be connected to a commercial network anymore. I just installed boinc because we had a four-day weekend, and I felt that I needed to do a burn-in test. I wish there was a way, though....

Another new machine. That is great! Closer to the cures/solutions. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edit: unfortunately, it won't be connected to a commercial network anymore. RT, will keep you and the team up to date. Just am tired of constantly being passed on BOIMC stats. Also helps cures and The Team! Sorry to hear about your quad core NiceMedTexMD. Just retuirned from Ft Meyer Florida where I learned how to inject Stem cells and Platlet Rich Plasm to regrow carteledge, ligaments and treat pain. Pretty awsome as wave of the future. That and adequate levels of Vit D! Lots of news about it but when one does the research adequate levels reduce all sorts of ailments. So sure pharm companies will try and kill it!

Just a note to mention that here at WCG and in other places that record stats, a lot of the "Users" are not individuals but rather a company or institution of some sort registered under one person's name. Some user names indicate that but many do not. 12 "users" here at WCG scored over 1,000,000 points today; Some as high as 7 million. Edit: Also, just in case you didn't know, the points (or credits) given by other projects (Other than WCG) vary wildly. Some give several times the points/credits for the same amount of work. Then when you consider the GPU points and projects, things get completely out of proportion. Now it is easy to start an argument here so let me just say that points and credits can only be compared within one environment e.g. WCG or SETI or whatever. To be precise, points can only be compared meaningfully within individual science projects on the same type of operating system (e.g.CEPII on Windows 7). For example, you can use the same idential machine and run Help Conquer Cancer under Windows and then switch the machine over to Ubuntu (or other Linux) and get more points from the same machine running the same science project(Edit2: because it is more efficient and produces more results--due primarily to the compiler). Now if you take that same machine off to running other non-WCG projects, you can earn a great deal more points/credits and if you were to add a graphics card with a big GPU and run GPU projects, your credits could go up 10-fold. All this is to say if you get caught up in chasing points, you probably want to go with relatively simple machines with multiple graphics cards and run some math project to find the next Mersenne Prime Number* or some such. My personal opinion is that while those kinds of things are interesting they do not mean as much to me as the humanitarian projects. In my search for humanitarian projects, I settled on the WCG as the best all around set of projects (and incidentally best organization). I am here to help find the cures and solutions. The points and credits are simply a fun after-thought that helps you keep track. A million credits when taken to the grocery store get you the same number of twinkies as does a 100 million. Each cruncher decides (knowinly or unknowinly) if they are in it for the credits or in it for other reasons. * Example only, I do not know anything about how that project awards points/credits. If this sounds preachy, I apologize..please forgive my pet peeve. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 3 times, last edit by RT at Dec 6, 2010 4:01:00 PM] |
