Re: World's best energy prices

Here in Switzerland price varies according to were you live.
In my place the cost is 0.212 Swiss Franc / kWhr.
This cost is the one to consider if you crunch 24/7. This cost considers the fact that during day and night tariffs are different and during workdays and week-ends tariffs are different. So this price of 0.212 is the average if you crunch the whole year long. It is the total price as it contains energy, transmission to the High voltage and then low voltage networks, distribution, service etc... VAT is also included and stands at 8%.

Al in all 0.212 Swiss Francs are at todays exchange rates:

0.1572 Euro or 15.72 Euro cents / kWhr

0.2203 US Dollar or 22.03 US cents / kWhr

Unfortunately Switzerland is by far economically not interesting if we look at energy costs for private use. The Swiss Franc has increased this year by 20% against euro and more against the dollar. This makes our costs to appear even higher.
Half of our energy production comes from Hydro energy so this price is abnormally high. You understood that the margins the utilities pocket are very high indeed. In Switzerland you have hundreds of utilities, which for a small country like switzerland does not allow for economies of scale. krakatuk better move in Canada. If possible northern Canada. You get low price electrical energy, high standards of living and near zero temperatures for the whole part of the year which means free cooling. A real crunchers paradise. I can imagine that datacenters must proliferate over there.

If I would consume more than 60'000 kWhr/year then I can qualify for a different contract, with industrial prices which are much lower.
To achieve that and if I consider a 250 Watts desktop crunching 24/7, I must set up a farm with 28 desktops that run without interruption, the whole year winter and summer. And that has a cost of 13'218 US dollars or 9'432 Euros. sad

Re: World's best energy prices

Why I'm asking about the energy prices. I think, it's too expensive for many of us and I have an idea...
Why don't we outsource our crunching in a place where the price is 4 times lower than what we pay now?
I would be happy to place my next crunching-only boxes "offshore", save some $, which would result in more crunching.
Certainly it would be not so extremely cheap, because somebody would be needed to setup & support these boxes + room to place them.
But I think it would still make sense, if many people would do it.

What do you think? Would you rent crunching-boxes (accessable and configurable over Internet) offshore?

I am game. Since my children left home I have lots of room for many PC. Power is cheap and during the winter, crunching actually helps keep the house warm wink

confused Re: World's best energy prices

Rej, does it mean, you could build a couple of PCs to rent them out? wink
I'm sure, there are a lot of people like me, who don't want to pay crazy prices for power and would like to crunch more.

Re: World's best energy prices

Not exactly. I would be in a position to take in all your extra machines here. Don't need keyboards nor screens. I would install them in a rack take care of them and cover the power cost. All I would ask for is 10% of the score.
So it would be worth the effort the machines would have to be dual cores at least. No needs for large hdd or super video cards.

I'm open for sugestions.

10% share would be to hard to maintain - this means frequent micro management unless you have some automation script. Like for 2.5 hrs per day, boinc will run under your account and the rest will run for your client (us the cruncher).

---------------
This has been done by many teams (like my team - farm stat page ) whc donate parts to form a farm and run under 1 account.

Sounds like a great idea. Starting would be hard cuz that means you have lease for 2 yrs or so to make it worth it.

In the bigger scale, crunchers can rent out time or wu. This would be a good business at the same time helping the cause.

That sounds like a great deal! If you can take 10 machines, one of it is yours! biggrin
But you would need to build them from the hardware, I would purchase. wink

No problem , the best would be to discard the casing all together. Mount the mb on on top of the other in a special casing. Someone would have to show me how.
