Phew - after just completing a 37 h unit I have just picked up another ~50 h unit.
I noticed that the results returned per day are down a bit - is this due to larger WU's hitting the grid. Has anyone else got big WU's recently? |

I can't say I've come across any that big, but I am getting bigger ones than I was earlier in the year. I guess it must be crunch time!

Yes, these longer work units are normal. We are in a middle of a batch of genes which seem to be particularly difficult to fold, so the run times for some of these work units are running longer than usual. Unfortunately, we cannot accurately predict the difficulty ahead of time, so that is why there is variation in run time length. Our formula for tuning the work units did predict that these genes are more difficult, so the work was chopped into about 50% more work units than the usual average. But, it looks like they are even more difficult than our formula predicted. This is all ok, however. It will take a bit longer to get to sending the results, but you will get more points for the additional work at that time. Early in the project we had some genes that ran over 200 hours for one work unit.

Interesting that. I seem to be getting the leftovers once the genes get sliced up because some are really small. My record so far ( not that I have been monitoring this in any way) is around two hours. . . . I get big WUs once a week and they seem to come to both my PCs around the same time. These big units get crunched over a day or two, which means they are usually involve working hours when the amount of processor power and memory available drops. The performance ratios seem drop as a result. I had understood that the performance test actually runs during the "preparing to send data" process. This was mentioned in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2924#18998 by David Autumns But just from observing the agent, this does not seem to be the case. I may be wrong.
After a biggy, I end up with a couple of small ones as my performance ratios drop. This raises my performance ranking over a couple of days and then comes a 30h WU….. but like I send, this is just an observation that is not based on systematic observation. |

Over the course of using the grid on my computers I have had some massive WUs.
In one case my computer took >180hours and with another WU it took >260 hours. I have had some massive ones in the past, and just the other day my 3GHz system had one that took ~65 hours, there are some pretty big ones out there. |

Wow - 260 hrs = over 10 days ... good gracious....... Well done - Your machine must be thought very highly of by the ranking process
