We will be discussing this internally on Monday. The members have clearly expressed concerns with the new option we deployed.
----------------------------------------What I will be proposing is that we add a configuration option to the profiles that you can set on the website. This will allow you to bypass all restrictions for cep2 (both the bandwidth and the 1 result per machine) if you choose to. The change was made because the IO issues were present on Linux as well as Windows (and Mac). We hadn't noticed it previously because none of us use Linux as our primary platform but when we went looking for it we found it. It is very important that the default behavior have minimal impact on user machines. Making sure that this is true is what allows us to get into partnerships such as with the company behind MakeCuresHappen and the more recent deals with the Sony VAIO's. For those 24/7 crunching computers the impact on user machines is just irrelevant. I would be happy with the proposed bypass option. ![]() |

For now, can you bump wu's to 2 per computer while you decide on your other suggestion? Or, have WCG allow us to crunch with half cores available ( if dual core, allow 1, if quad core, allow 2, etc..). I think this way folks with dual core systems won't get bogged down. Just a thought. Regardless, am here to crunch whatever is available.

This would seem to be a good solution. Not everyone may have the problems you have described. I had five dedicated machines for CEP2, with 32 processors, and I have 30mb download so I have no bandwith problem. I have now added CWP, to those machines (even though I had another 10 windows machines dedecated to CWP) and have reduced my contribution to CEP2 from 32 processors to 5. By the way, it may actually reduce it to zero for part of the time. I noticed that my I7 950 is processing 8 CWP with one CEP2 in the cache waiting to process. It is now not processing any CEP2 WUs, due to this change, where previously it was processing 8 tasks, 24x7. It seems that they way you implemented this, you can only have one CEP2 in the cache, and if you cache 2 days, I may only process five CEP2 every 2 days, as the one CEP2 on each of five machines works its way through cache, instead of the 100 results per day of CEP2 I was doing before with no retrictions. I am sure there is a flaw in my math, but are you seeing a significant reduction in CEP2 contribution as this change takes effect. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

<snip> What I will be proposing is that we add a configuration option to the profiles that you can set on the website. This will allow you to bypass all restrictions for cep2 (both the bandwidth and the 1 result per machine) if you choose to. <snip> A couple of comments: 1) While this seems reasonable, I find it disappointing that you did not let us know beforehand or at least at the same time you implemented the change. And while I am at it, I just built a new I7/870 to run Ubuntu and this project. I noticed that my point count was down yesterday so I began searching through the computers to find the problem and found only one WU running on each of my Ubuntu machines. ![]() 2) Comments about deals with companies without a simple language explanation is just asking for trouble. I think I know, based on my opinion of WCG and your comments, that these are agreements that just limit how much WCG can interfere with normal activities of users of that company's computers but that is not clear and as you know, anything not clear is open for the conspiracy theorists. Keep up the good work ![]() |

So, let's keep the focus on that ! Thank you to share with us the issue involved and listen the concerns from many crunchers about it. Keep walking !

Don't know about MakeCuresHappen, but the Sony VAIO-deal on the other hand is mentioned in the BOINC-news (but strangely not WCG's news...). Apparently SONY sells some computers they're calling VAIO, both laptops but also some specialized desktop-computers. VAIO's comes with various installed software, and except for laptops using Atom-cpu's, the BOINC-client-software is now also included. Users must choose to enable their BOINC-client, this will get it to attach to WCG and start processing work... So, if WCG interferes with things, it's not SONY's employees that will complain about a badly-behaving application running on their work-computer. Instead, it's SONY's customers that's selected the option to run the included BOINC-client that will complain... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. It will be interesting to see what WCG decides. I'll support it either way. Installing a switch is in line with what other projects are doing. FreeHAL allows 4 settings for how intensive their wu's are on a machine. CPDN has always allowed users to select long or short climate models. Most now allow users to select or deselect GPU usage or other project-specific functions.
----------------------------------------Good luck WCG. ![]() Cheers. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
