Re: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 Scheduling change

I've only seen usability issues when running linux on usb stick other than that its smooth sailing.

I'm curious to know what kind of issues you had and with which projects?

can we get an exception for those computers that would like to crunch on CEP2 only?

I second that motion.

Re: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 Scheduling change

I really do not completely believe in this IO explanation as this appears to be more of a rationing of WU's to fairly allocate relatively scarce CEP2 WU's among the WCG crunching community especially as Windows and MAC computers come online to crunch CEP2. Why scarce? Probably IMHO because of the heavy tech issues associated with this project may simply overwhelm either WCG or Harvard's infrastructures, or both as the huge supply of computers that will be able to crunch CEP2 come online.

Re: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 Scheduling change

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I will bring up the suggestion for if only CEP2 is selected, then multiple work units would be allowed per host. I am not sure if this is possible. Please give us time as this is an experiment to see if user IO is better.

Thanks,

My first 90 days for CEP2 was crunched on usb stick (linux on usb stick; boinc binaries and data on hard drive).

Issues - everthing on usb stick:
totally unresponsive system; ie. opening terminal would take hours

Issues - Linux OS on usb stick/ boinc binaries and data on hd:
Less unresponsive (depending on size and speed of usb stick); its like watching some video online but keeps on pausing because its buffering.

I tried CEP2 on USB drives also with little success. The drives would just stop responding. They would be so corrupted I would have to reformat and reinstall the OS. I just figured there were too many read/writes for them to handle. I've had no problems running the other projects on USB drives. I have found that an 8GB drive minimum seem to work the best.

I know all who are involved are working hard but it doesn't seem practicle to limit everyone. How will the project proceed as planned if such limits are placed?

Seems to me only 3 parties have skin in the game; WCG, Harvard & crunchers. Apparently WCG is OK with these limits as it is finally in BETA. Apparently Harvard is OK with these limits as it is in BETA. There is plently of crunch work at WCG for crunchers. So I am having a bit of problem finding a problem. peace

I was only wondering if the limits would curtail the research. I didn't mean to imply that I had a problem with whatever decisions they make for getting the results to the scientists. peace

Re: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 Scheduling change

Does this change mean that if I have my cache set locally to 1 day as it is now, BOINC will continue to ask for work repeatedly and get the no work available message as it is doing now until the current task is finished, if set to recieve CEP2 only ? If so, I should probably reduce the setting to 0.01 days to avoid this and give the servers a wee break.

Re: Clean Energy Project Phase 2 Scheduling change

Thinking this through a bit, if multi-core and only WCG, the selection would need to have at least one other WCG science as else there will be idling cores. If also contributing outside of WCG, well no worries, but I'd set the WCG weight higher so that port of call for work would be here first at each request to backfill.

And yes, 0.01 or 0.00 "Connect" and "Additional Buffer" would stop the hammering [call spread will though increment], whilst the current CEP2 task is crunching.

For now, I don't see a way to do unattended back to back CEP2 crunching on any multi-core host since the client only knows WCG as a project and the client always endeavoring to not have any cores idle.
