A feature request?

Well I saw the suggestions thread, and had to post something that has been on my mind for a while. I don't know if this has been brought up before, and I don't have time to go through all the posts here looking, so I apologize in advance if it has...

Currently there is a checkbox with the option:

" If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project."

Would it be possible to instead have:

If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from these projects:

followed by checkboxes for the projects again?

Its not a problem, but it would be nice to specify what project(s) you would like to crunch when the one(s) you are working on don't have work. That way you can exclude certain projects from filling up the machine.

After crunching this project for a while it is the only thing I have ever thought of that I wish was changed, so I must say you are all doing a darn* good job, keep up the good work.

Re: A feature request?

Yes, this has been asked several times. As far as I remember, it can't be done, or requires some serious development.

Re: A feature request?

ok, thanks for the reply, not really a big deal, just one of those "it would be nice if...." things.

Re: A feature request?

Eh confused
Is it not in the MyGrid/MyProjects where you can select the project you want to do?

Re: A feature request?

Hello ebattleon.

No. If no projects you have selected have work units available, then you can choose to receive a work unit from a random project, but it is not possible to define a set of alternative projects.

This would require selecting a set of projects and numbering them 1, then selecting from the remaining projects and numbering them 2, etc. Finally you could either quit, or select a take anything available if there is nothing for groups 1, 2, 3, etc.

But this apparently requires some serious changes to the BOINC server software.

Re: A feature request?

Along these same lines I would like the ability to stack rank which projects I want to work on in the order I select. So whatever I select for number 1 I want all their work units first until there are no more than I want it to go to the next project. Any new projects I want to be put at the end of my queue.

Re: A feature request?

Yes, been requested too and part of the same problem. Think it will on top substantially impact scheduler performance, a key element of the BOINC distribution system. The simple working solution is to limit the choice. Generally WCG gives exclusive crunchers first choice.

Have asked knreed some time ago to let the ''if no work is available...'' not kick in until client cache is empty, which he would be looking at. Then with e.g. a 2 day cache, you'd have your prime choices only, even when supply is temporarily interrupted. This would work though only when doing WCG exclusively. If attached to other projects, the client would start backfilling there, BUT, later WCG would be compensated with the inter-project debt/weighting system. Even within WCG there's an inter-science weighting system. The distributors are set to provide a fairly equal amount of work to a client over time for each science selected, but that works only long as the selections are not changed.

edit: So as noted, all this requires serious development and that has to be done in collaboration with the Berkeley group too, so it can be integrated into the trunk source code. WCG is pretty special with so many sciences running concurrent.
