sad Where is the server status webpage?

After some minutes of searching, I conclude there is no server status webpage. I bet a certain large consulting company's customers surely insist on such as part of any website used by many thousands of people...

While we're on the topic, I'm guessing the current problems are related to the fsck error message. Too bad that's in a locked thread so no one can ask for clarification. If nothing else in terms of clarification, can't they handle the bit of JavaScript required to provide an elapsed time for the posts? I don't have a time zone calculator built into my head and it isn't very meaningful to know that someone noticed a problem at some time in the past.

Hmm... I suppose I can get some idea for what is going on by looking at the posted time of this post and comparing it to the fsck post, assuming I can manage to find my way back there again.

confused Re: Where is the server status webpage?

Judging by the time difference reported between the two posts, it seems that the server problem are at least 10 hours old now. They must have left it to the morning, so that's probably about another 7 hours from now...

shanen, knowing the WCG techs, they'll be working long into the night, until all is resolved and back up and running smoothly again.

BTW, as, unfortunately, there's no clue as to whereabout's in the world you're based, I can't help work out the time the filesystem went down - except to say that it was approx, 4 hrs before midnight UTC.

You can set the timezone displayed in the forums by visiting this link: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/myprofile

The current time and time zone displayed in the forums is in the bottom right corner of all of the forum pages. You can compare this to the post time to know how long it has been.

There used to be a couple of external BOINC server trackers to include one that had graphs to go with, but they've most all gone that included WCG. Presently only find http://www.boincuk.com/check_servers.php which shows WCG... online.

Generally something is always up to find what the pulse is like, either the Known Issues or the BOINC support forum of WCG, and if even these are down, there's the Facebook http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=5833215229&ref=tsand Twitter http://twitter.com/wcgrid channels which virtually simultaneous reported the file-system issue. So do we need such a page? If the client message log tells if there is no science for research XYZ, then there is not and if the log says that "Maintenance in progress", then it's maintenance in progress. Sure I love gizmoz, but is it a must have?

rose Re: Where is the server status webpage?

Strictly speaking, they don't need a server status page, but it's become something of a reasonable expectation. In addition, with apologies to Rome, all roads should lead to that single location without expecting the volunteers (or customers or visitors in more general cases) to search all over the place depending on how they happen to think about the problem. I can't claim to be a typically naive user, but I can definitely say that I could not find anything like definitive information about the outage.

The fsck is not a description of a problem. I'm pretty sure it stands for file system check, and it's a standard Linux diagnostic program (probably a set of programs, actually) that is used after something has gone wrong. It does have some repair capabilities, but I'm just glad the system is back up again...

Actually, at the time of my original post I forgot to consider some evidence that the system had been down for some hours before I even noticed it. Now a good server status page would include that sort of historical information, too, but I admit that I don't really care that much.

Actually, I'm somewhat glad it's a relatively low key system (even though I'm the sort to rack up over 260,000 (work done) points). I think that was one of the problems with the original seti@home project, and I'm content that BOINC has evolved as I suggested at the time...

I suppose the flower icon is supposed to signify some sort of peace offering? My intentions are certainly not romantic.

Re: Where is the server status webpage?

Well, the fact that WCG has run for years without a server status page does support the arguement that it is not required. Still, it is a common part of BOINC at virtually all of the other projects. Having it available here would be a good thing for us crunchers. I would like to see something similar to what SETI has - it not only has server status but also reports on the number of WUs ready to be sent, out for processing, waiting for validation and such. As good as it was to see the fileserver problem fixed yesterday, it was frustrating knowing that there was an unknown but obviously huge backlog of WU waiting to be processed by the validators. With this type of server status page, we crunchers could have seen the magnitude of the backlog as well as how quickly it was shrinking allowing us to estimate how long we might have to wait for the WUs we had reported to get processed. That would have allowed folks to know that it was very unlikely that they would have any work completed in time for the evening update. It would also be a handy way to see when processes/servers are down for maintenance without having to guess or presume. Can we live without this? Yes, we have for years but ignorance is not bliss.
