smile Solar System Initiative (SSI)

A little update on my solar system situation.

After having runned and compared how the i7 980X and the i7 950 behave, it is clear that the 980X is the workhorse that has to be used on the devices that crunch 24/7. It is there that you get the best value for money. The 980X has the best consumption ratio against flops and Ghz, a better overclockability. I have a limited number of devices I can have in total so I must assign processors in a way to maximize the output in terms of units, runtime and points.
This is why I have dedicated the i7 950 to the family PC's that do crunch for WCG but beside personal other use. On the personal machines overclocking of CPU and RAM is very limited or not done because no BSD is accepted and the system must be very reliable. It means that a 980X will in average give 40% of its capability which is a pity.

Today this is the picture:

Dedicated devices
Venus (980X)
Saturn (980X)
Terra (980X)
Neptune (980X)
Pluto (980X)
Ceres (980X)
Eris (980X)
Mars (980X)
Mercury (980X)
Europa (980X instead of 950)
Phobos (980X)
Deimos (980X)
Pandora (950 - Will be upgraded with the 980X from Jupiter)

Personal use
Jupiter (980X - Will get the 950 from Pandora)
Uranus (950 - It had a 980X that went to Europa)
Ganymede (950)
Haumea (950)

Planned dedicated devices (I have no more 980X left)
Callisto (950)
IO (950)

I saw that 980X prices are starting to go down slowly. Let's see what will be the bottom level.
These last days external temps have increased (nice weather) and today I had to pull out some devices for cooling reasons. sad
