Re: NVIDIA Support and Multicore....

Rather than a lot of speculation, it is very easy to get empherical data on how fast your GPU is compared to your CPU. If you have a dual precission nVidia card (GTX2xx or above), go to Milkyway and turn on CPU and GPU processing. It is easy to see how much faster your GPU is vs. your CPU. You can also see how fast you ran a specific wu on your GPU vs how fast your wingman ran the same wu on a CPU. In my case, a wu runs in about 11 to 12 minutes on one of my GTX260's vs 6 to 6 1/2 hours on a i7 920 CPU.

Re: NVIDIA Support and Multicore....

Given that HCC & C4CW on Linux are way way faster than Windows, I'd not be surprised if the Milkyway CPU jobs do same.

I can't believe that switching OS get's you a factor of 50X or even 10X in crunching performance on the same hardware. No way. It could be somewhat faster but the crunching is done by code that is more or less the same Windows or Linux. The management of the tasks, disk writing etc. etc. are different and can be more efficient in Linux but that cannot bring such high factors in crunching speed. The crunching speed is 95% due to the Processor and RAM Memory performance and hard disk write read perf.

Re: NVIDIA Support and Multicore....

That was a comparison between GPU and CPU performance, not Linux and Windows. Dataman highlighted the reason some people chose to crunch with a GPU rather than a CPU, or at least primarily with a GPU.

Re: NVIDIA Support and Multicore....

Sorry then. The phrase of Sek was ambiguous to me, which caused the misunderstanding. biggrin

Even if this is true for WCG, it's often not true for other projects, example the current HadCM3 is roughly 2x faster under windows than linux...

Re: NVIDIA Support and Multicore....

You will have missed the crux... HCC/C4CW are integer intense and former prime target for GPUfication. If the MW task is too, it's not improbably it will run faster under Linux too.

Who's going to test... me, just for the heck of it.

28 minutes, 19.097% >>>>>>> 146 minutes and declining on a stock Q6600... that than is 6 / 2.5 = 2.4 times faster (but do not know what if that GTX260's vs 6 to 6 1/2 hours on a i7 920 CPU.
is running hyperthreading... presume so).

For now, once again, Hallelujah... Linux it is.

Hyperthreading yes but neither the CPU or GPU is OC'ed.

BTW: Milkyway is down this morning.
