Weirdness... it thus seems that the first 3 were received fine by the clients and upon the user abort on the 29th, the rest went wonky. Hard to think it not to be coincidental that the reports went on the rise on around that date.

Hard to think it not to be coincidental that the reports went on the rise on around that date. Your reply got me thinking so I checked the last 15 download failed WUs I had and there does seem to be a pattern. 14 of the 15 dispatched the initial quorum OK. After a period of 6 to 10 days repair WUs are dispatched all of which fail download. If I were to guess it seems that something is happening to the download file following the initial quorum dispatch.
