Mobile Phones??

Hi, I was thinking as mobiles are now getting faster chips in them.. is it not possible to creat some sort of software that would allow the mobile phone's power to do the research? i mean most people leave thier phones on all the time???

Re: Mobile Phones??

Hi too,

Liking your "I was thinking", and then I thought "then why is he not looking first if this was discussed before?"

Very Very synoptic: WCG apps would burn your handy or cell in minutes and eat all storage capacity in seconds.

Sorry

Re: Mobile Phones??

I know it has been discussed a lot, but like a laptop it could be configured to only run BOINC when the phone is plugged in. For many people this could be 8 hours/day when they are sleeping. I don't think anybody is suggesting a phone (or laptop) run the WCG while on battery. If it gets too warm it could be throttled automatically or with settings (like the WCG default CPU usage of 60%).

The iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM and this is enough to run most WCG projects. And with a multi-tasking OS it could be pretty much set and forget.

I hope it is just a matter of time before somebody gets BOINC and the WCG running on iOS and/or Android as the potential is huge.

Did you not read that the processing required will BURN UP THE PHONE. As in flames type burning. Too hot to hold. Melted plastic. Not the same as.... never mind

Re: Mobile Phones??

Can't really be sure if the temps would be that hot or not til some real data was scored instead of skeptical opinions. My concern though wouldn't be melted plastic itself rather then causing the battery to possibly explode. If it truly was getting that hot that is. SONY and others have had incidents where manufacturing flaws caused lithium batteries to blow and if temps can really get this hot, then they could also break down and do the same.

Perhaps now that SONY helped get us BOINCLite, then now someone will put the mighty iPhone to the test to prove our theories and give us some facts.

Re: Mobile Phones??

Someone did a port of BOINC quite some time ago and then gave up... why would anyone think it's an original idea?

As to just released BOINCLite read and follow link to the info sheet: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6050

Skeptical opinions, whether melting or exploding is semantics. The device is scraps and maybe your groin too. Even now that this version exists, WCG being a non-research creating hosting service, don't see it happening in years to come. If you know a humanitarian benefacting project that can be turned into some computational form that will last at least 6 months in full production... and then there is the learning curve. 8 researches life, at least 4 more in the pipe to develop and launch and a limited human and financial resource... Realism. A nice project for someone at a university to find some X prime, than write a paper or thesis on it, that's what I think.

Re: Mobile Phones??

Or, you could talk to the guys from QCN, to make an app for boinclite or boincoid, that will require only an active internet connection, when the gps accelerometer start ...'shaking' :)
