Hello Snurk - just a quickie - how do you calculate the Run time/project? If I divide my total run time (25.1 years) by my total number of projects (16) I get 1.56 instead of the 1.25 that appears on my signature.
Many thanks for all your efforts in providing us with up-to-date and beautiful signatures. |

Your runtime/project is not divided by 'your' number of projects, but divided by the 'all time' number of projects and that's 20 at the moment (not including Beta). On the bottom of your signature you see 21 little bars, Beta included. 5 of them are shadowed. So you are missing 5 projects, probably because they already finished before you start crunching. Runtime/project is the basis for the globes. Anyone that has 2 years/project, sapphire globe, with the present 20 sciences/phases can directly relate and know that the total contribution is at least 40 run time years at that time. RaulBonegio is a current easy example. 1.25 x 20 is 25. Or 25 / 1.25 is 20. Or 25 / 20 is 1.25. The one secret in the sig is how much the mean daily runtime days are... maybe a feature suggestion, to compute same as Gflops an running average of last 30 days... but we don't want to lay all nerves bare ;>)

Isn't this a bit unfair on new crunchers? Someone who joins today will probably never get to a significant level, as there are probably 10 projects that he/she will never be able to crunch.

Granted someone who starts later in a race will be further behind but that doesn't mean they can't run faster and eventually catch up. The number of projects being counted doesn't matter. If you have 500 years crunching time, that will still be 500 no matter how many projects you divide by.

I understand the thinking, but feel that the longer WCG lives, the more difficult it will be to encourage newcomers to join as there will be little incentive for them to become Emerald or Sapphire globes. Many will see our signatures and want to do the same, but they will be handicapped by projects that they have never even heard of.

You make a valid point Raul and it is obviously relevant to someone like myself. However, as I understand it, the coloured Globes idea and the rationale behind them, is Snurk's and they are not "officially" recognised by WGC.
----------------------------------------A discussion of the rationale of including projects closed before a member joins would be interesting but it would have to be Snurk's decision. Even as they stand now I think Snurk's sig blocks are a great advert for WGC. |

You're right Jonnie, and the signatures are a great advert. Well Snurk - it's in your hands amigo, and we'll abide by your decision.

The way the globes are calculated is the most fair solution I can come up with.
----------------------------------------There are crunchers who have cruched 300 cpu years devided over 20 projects, and have 20 project badges: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewMemberInfo.do?userName=Jason1478963 There are others who crunched 300 cpu years and decided to dedicate all work to only two projects, so only having 2 project badges: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewMemberInfo.do?userName=Alexus78 At first glance, looking at their badges, the first cruncher seems to have done much more. The globe however reveals that both have the same amount of work done. Badges of finished projects are out of reach for newcomers, but globes can be reached in any color any time, as long as you bring some power. It's like KWSN - A Shrubbery said, just let the crunching time add up and the globes will come no matter how many projects are available. ![]() |

I may be tempted to have a go at this one day, but I have to find a solution for data that goes missing in the database because of days that the signature script fails, for whatever reason, to collect the data. Thanks though, for reanimating this idea. ![]() Oh yeah, here are the latest sigs: http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af195/wcgsig/95236.gif ; hunterc http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af195/wcgsig/783354.gif ; 8cbx SNURK ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by SNURK at Mar 9, 2012 8:01:14 AM] |
