I will run some C4CW on the 920 but I won't have any Windows numbers to make a comparison. Nano, were you able to run C4CW on your linux system? How did it do? ![]() |

This is a bit off topic.
----------------------------------------Can you update eg. from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 with the Update manager? I'm just curious, as I'm planning a dual boot with windows in the near future, and therefore, would like to prevent any hassle that might come up with updating to newer versions of Ubuntu.

See instructions at this link. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaverickUpgrades I have upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 on 3 machines, and from 10.04 to 10.10 on one. So far all the upgrades went smoothly, although I do back up everything beforehand just in case. ![]() |

I just did a comparison between win7 64 and ubuntu 10.4 (lucid) 64. Ran clean water project 100%. the test was 24 hrs +- 10 minutes. Win7 completed 80 wu's, Ubuntu completed 112 wu's. This was tested on my 2.66 westmere dual quad core (16 threads total) and 12GB ram home built machine. One note to make is ubuntu is throttling the cpu's so it's not running at max speed either. Haven't quite figured out why yet. It did this on my harpertown box but went away after awhile. Already went into bios to lock the speed at max thus can't adjust them in ubuntu. I would highly suggest anyone looking for more crunching power to install ubuntu 64. Don't know if this would be the same under 32 bit ubuntu but pretty sure you will gain from it. Fairly easy to install as dual boot. If you get stuck, there is plenty of help on the forums here. I would suggest you back up your system in the event something goes wrong. Well worth it!

I know you can boot many newer PC's off of a thumb drive, but do many of them support booting off of an SD card that is in a slot connected to the USB slot on the motherboard or even possibly a USB adapter with an SD Card slot? I just wondered if anyone tried before I waste a lot of time experimenting. I know it will be case by case with systems, but wondered if "most" hardware really determined whether it was an actual thumb drive or just usb media.
----------------------------------------Edit: I am thinking of using Dotsch/UX if that matters. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Dec 1, 2010 11:07:14 PM] |

Edit: I am thinking of using Dotsch/UX if that matters. Interesting idea. My question is would the SD card be recognized as a USB device if you used an SD/USB adapter. I may play with it when time permits but that won't happen until after the upcoming holidays. There may also be a problem with the Dotsch/Ux tools used to make bootable USB drives. Will they recognize SD? If you try it please post your results.

Well...I'm debating on the SD card because if I don't like using it for BOINC, I can still use it in my camcorder. I know some older motherboards just had boot from USB device and some of the newer ones segregate USB thumb drives from other USB devices. Like I said, it would probably depend on each independent system, but I just didn't know if that version of Linux would work on SD to begin with. I too have to wait after the holidays just in case I get one as a gift. Currently my largest one is 2GB but it is used in my phone. What is the smallest memory Dotsch/Ux can install on?
----------------------------------------Edit: Never mind on minimum storage/memory needed. I found it on their page. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Dec 2, 2010 1:23:01 AM] |

I use SD cards with USB udapters for Dotsch/UX all the time.
----------------------------------------Tried it on my 3 years old desktop (Q6600) and my laptop. Both think it's normal USB drive. ![]() |
