Re: Which Linux is best?

The best Linux Distro is the one that has plenty of developer support - that would be Ubuntu and Fedora.

Re: Which Linux is best?

Community support is equally as important; ubuntu official boinc packages are still stuck on 6.10.17 which is OK and works but some times it can be nice when the community update packages quickly.

Re: Which Linux is best?

? The WCG download page goes to 6.10.58 for Linux https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadAgain.do and certainly the GetDeb ppa offers this version since about 3 months http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu in the more convenient .deb installable format (intermittent availability), but can be seen on google cache http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?...ct=clnk&client=ubuntu .

Why the Ubuntu official repository has not picked up... don't know... it's all voluntarism.

edit: one more link to the latest recommended: http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/packages/show/210005 specific referenced to Lucid.

Re: Which Linux is best?

edit the boinc config files found in directories that will be named similar to /var/lib/boinc or /var/lib/boinc-client. Edit "remote hosts.cfg" to include the IP of your windows desktop machine. Edit "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" (sp) and pick an easy password.

2 questions. Can I use the hostname of the Windows box instead of the IP and can I leave the password blank? I'm asking because that is the way I have it set on my Windows machines using BoincTasks.

Re: Which Linux is best?

You can leave both... depending how well your network is configured the name will resolve... at least they do on my WLAN picking the host namefrom the list.

Yes you can leave the password blank. Good idea? Depends on how locked up your LAN is.

Thanks. All I need is instructions on how to access the correct directories. I know to look in the messages tab to get started but I never got pass that. I had someone who was going to help the linux noob (me) do this before but he went AWOL. Does Linux allow you to edit the directories the same way as Windows? I'm using the dotschux flavor of Linux which is based on an older version of Ubuntu. 8.04 I think.

Re: Which Linux is best?

I am no Linux expert but my approach is Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu server with essential Desktop installs either way you get Boinc to work with out much hassle. You will be able to Install BOINC via Synaptic and forget there after.

Done and working.

Rips through HCC WUs on this i7-920 @ 4.1 GHze on USB drive in less than an hour.

While you don't get as many point with Linux you get more WUs done and I'm not doing this for points.

Re: Which Linux is best?

nano, what level of boinc do you have running? 16 pts per hr is kinda low for a 4.1 GHz processor. If you are running an older level of boinc (5.xxx) then that is the cause, there was some sort of bug where the benchmark would give only about 1/2 the points.

Re: Which Linux is best?

confused
Hi nanoprobe,

Are you running Linux 32-bit or Linux 64-bit on your Intel I7? Linux 64-bit is much more efficient, due to a new 64-bit compiler that is not restricted to the basic x86 instruction set but uses all the added SSE instructions that have been added over the last 2 decades. The old GCC 32-bit compiler was embarrassingly inefficient compared with many Windows compilers. The new Linux 64-bit compiler appears to be very efficient.
