Once 6.14 goes in production I'll do a dual boot test on what the new difference is. Before it was ~4:21 (target02) on W7-64 and in dual boot under Lucid Lynx 2.6.32.26 kernel ~2:41 hours, which the 6.14 beta still did under Linux, unwavering.

Given the news about the new Windows application, I will hold off doing any more work on installing Ubuntu.

on my i7 960 the new beta is still running about 45 minutes longer than on my quad with ubuntu. depends on systems and processor's. my quad is a 9550.

Anyone notice the difference between CPU time and total time on this project? I just looked and am seeing anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. This is on my 8 core harpertown cruncher running ubuntu 10.10. Starting to look like cep2. Am just finishing 5 yrs crunching here and moving on to hfcc. Just an observation.

Wish I had a harpertown; I would disable one thread just to see what improvements this would in itself make on a per thread basis. This is not just comon to WCG, it is widespread. With more and more threads comming to CPU's it might be the case that for some projects if you have say 16 cores or more that projects might benefit from freeing up one thread.
----------------------------------------Of course the real answer is to crunch more than one project. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Dec 26, 2010 9:39:54 PM] |

skgiven, disabling one thread will speed up the other WUs. However, I believe this is due to the hyperthreading. I tested it out on my system a few months ago. Don't remember the exact number, but it is better overall to let all the threads run.
----------------------------------------Here are some rough numbers. If I let run all threads, then I can finish 8 HFCC WU in 6 hrs. If I only run 4 threads, then I can finish the 4 WU in about 4 hrs, basically a 66% improvement in time per WU. However, I finish less WU. Extending that out, I can do 32 WU in 24 hrs with hyperthreading or 24 without. Note, I don't have a harpertown, but a xeon processor. 4 cores -- 8 with hyperthreading (or 16 on my dual processor system) ![]() |

I have no doubt that HT improves total overall returns.
----------------------------------------What I mean is using Boinc Manager (advanced preferences, processor usage, on multiprocessor systems use at most 99%); that way only one thread is freed, not half the threads. If, for example, a 16thread Linux system takes 2h 40min per task but each task loses 30min then by freeing up one thread you might be in the situation that the loss of one thread offsets the 16X30min time loss; 16X30min=480min (8h). Even if the other 15threads then lost 10min each that’s only a 150min loss – less than one extra thread overall. [Edit 2 times, last edit by skgiven at Dec 26, 2010 10:04:57 PM] |

I thought about disabling 1 core awhile back. In the short time, you will loose number completed but in the long run you will gain due to faster completed wu's. Am sure one could calculate how long that would take but I'm to lazy to do it.

That made me curious, as I've never had appreciable difference between CPU and total time on C4CW target 02s. So I checked to see whether I had any completed target 03 WUs and found that both of my slowest machines have now run a few. On one of them, still no difference between CPU and total time. The other one showed about an hour difference, but it turned out that there was a reason. It had dropped its Internet connection while these WUs were running and that made this happen in the middle of the result log: [01:56:16] Percent complete = 71.996400 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 Commandline = ../../projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu -screen none -in in.wcg.acc -var wcgsteps1 10000 -var wcgsteps2 5601 -var loop 2 -var restart 1 -var rinterval 100 -var ifile in.wcg.acc -var wcgseed 4069777 [02:53:22] Percent complete = 72.496375 So the resets to checkpoint every time BOINC tried unsuccessfully to contact the Internet completely explain the discrepancy in this case. Saw that brinktastee already has a Wine session running with BOINCTasks inside. He may pretty plz write up the instructions for the interested (me for instance), how to install Wine and how to add BOINCTasks as an application :P Sorry Sekerob, I just read this thread today. I'm dyslexic so I don't read all the posts here. Seen in one of your screen shots that you have succeeded in installing BOINCTasks in Wine. It is a very cool app. ![]() |
