People have successfully been putting linux distros on Xbox 360s for a while now. Is anyone here doing that? There would be no need for BOINC or WCG projects to be ported over to anything, since the Xbox 360 would be running Linux off of a tri-core 3.2 ghz PPC proc, am I correct?
----------------------------------------I know this topic has been brought up before, but I've never seen that anyone has done it successfully here. Before I do it, I wanted to hear some input. Here's someone booting into Linux with an Xbox 360 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDV6iaMmnwk Now, if I could install a Ubuntu distro, installing BOINC would be as simple as using the package manager... right? Thanks Guys and Gals ![]() ![]() |

Here's the one technical problem I see, only 512 MB of ram. The processor, it's a 3 core with 3 logical cores as well.
----------------------------------------I don't know if there's a way I could upgrade the RAM without seeing whether or not the RAM is soldered onto the mainboard... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Nickoli at Sep 9, 2010 3:09:36 PM] |

And here's the RAM on the MOBO:
----------------------------------------http://img120.imageshack.us/i/xboxfw9.jpg/ Soldered on. The only thing that could be done there, possibly, is to have a technician solder higher capacity RAM onto the board. Like This: http://cgi.ebay.com/Infineon-GDDR3-VGA-RAM-HY...0&hash=item3cb01fcba2 That's a 512 MB of, what appears to be, the same thing. I'd have to compare pins and specs, though. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Nickoli at Sep 9, 2010 3:15:45 PM] |

I think WCG would need a new app for each project in oder to run in xbox

Falcon,
----------------------------------------I don't see why it would. It would simply be a computer running Linux at that point. ![]() |

Hi Nickoli,
----------------------------------------fraid not. Here's a post/thread that discusses Xbox and other esoteric platforms. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=21304#174881 Even when Linux could be ported with approval of Billy G, the CPU would not be compatible with any of the science apps which are only available for Intel x86 and x64 family and the old Mac PPC processor.

I wonder what BOINC on a Xbox 360 running Linux would see the processor as, then.

BOINC would just see a CPU and then send that info to WCG and messaging back that this or that CPU or platform is not supported.
----------------------------------------Maybe Seti could use it: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=22869

So, the issue lies with getting the project programs that run inside BOINC (AutoDock, etc) to support running on that CPU?
