----------------------------------------Hey, how are you. You have agood memory. The previous computer are as they were, the i7 desktop and the Core 2 Duo desktop @100%; the i5 and Core 2 Duo laptops 60%. I am still studying the suggestions on temp monitors. A friend, a major cruncher, suggested something called "HW Monitor from http://www.cpuid.com/. What I am going to do right now is wait for a while and watch to see what happens. So far, the new machine has been on line about what? 5 hours. I am "watching" this thread, so it will not get lost. When I do something, I will definitely post it. |

I bought this for my mac book and it really makes a difference. But my mac has an aluminum case and I suspect this would be less effective if your laptop has a plastic case.
If you have an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad then I suggest running this . I've used it at the office and it works very well for stepping up the rpm's of your cpu fan. ![]() |

I opted for Core Temp. Simple, no muss no fuss, gave me the temps immediately.
----------------------------------------I installed it on three laptops. Most are spending most of the time sitting and just crunching. Twice a week, one goes with me to work wher I do spend a lot of the time in business software. I am still not going to do anything with raising my % used until i see what the new i7-840QM adds to my crunching results. There may be a good reason that BOINC starts out at 60%. |

So, here are some readings on the three laptops. Nothing else was open but BOINC when I took the readings. All readings were taken when the CPU peaked at 100%.
----------------------------------------Core 2 Duo T7200 Max allowable 100degC @100% 70degC i5-520m " " 105degC @100% 65degC i7-840QM " " 100degC @100% 65degC I am still waiting to see any change in my daily credits. The new machine has finished many work units, five pages at Results Status filtered for LaptopLIV. But only a few have been validated. So, still interested in any opinions about going up from 60% on the CPU usage on the laptops. |

Although they can work perfectly well at 65~70C, I like to keep them below 60C. Maybe I'm to cautious, I don't know.
----------------------------------------Core 2 Duo T7200 usually between 49-59C (33.33% CPU usage). Core 2 Duo P7350 usually between 42-48C (60.00% CPU usage). Note the big difference between those two chips, both at 2.00GHz (actually, I have my P7350 slightly overclocked to 2.15GHz!). 65nm vs. 45nm. Former is is a Lenovo Thinkpad T60, latter is an Asus G51. Core i7 740QM usually between 49-57C (25.00% CPU usage, 8 threads). [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 12, 2010 2:38:29 PM] |

Some advice that I have discovered about crunching with laptops:
----------------------------------------1. Remove your battery = the heat generated from running a laptop nonstop with WCG will kill your battery life. Heat is the number one enemy of batteries. I had a brand new battery and within a year of 24/7 crunching it was down to lasting only about 30 minutes. 2. Use only the most efficient cpus for crunching. I find that by using i3/i5 cpus based on 32nm process I can keep temperatures significantly lower than with older 45/65 nm processors. Of course this also depends on how beefy your laptop cooling system is. 3. If possible, place your laptop on a surface like metal grating which allows easy airflow to the cooling fan at the bottom of the laptop. This will keep temperatures much lower than with a cooling pad even. Flat tables with no cooling pads are the worst for heat buildup. By following these steps you can run most laptops 24/7 at 100% cpu usage... Hope this helps! ![]() |

My chill pads are of an open grid metal surface type, what we in the metals business - I am in the metals business - what we call "expanded metal". I added this Temp Core monitor, I am on all machines no where near the max. The max on all is between 100-105C. I noted at 100% usage on all three machines, the most I saw was 70C, but mostly 65C. I am pretty sure that I am staying at 60%. I agree with being conservative. |
