In my part of California, where electricity costs more than Gold dust, a well maintained I7 920 at 100% CPU 24/7, with 3 GTX260 GPU's at 100% GPU, 12 Gig RAM, 9 fans at 100% and a 1000W PSU costs ~$115/month/machine. I have recently shrunk the farm to 6 machines ... you can do the math. ![]() Holy cow man I bet you can hear that thing singing across the house! Wonder if liquid cooling could help? Do you use the GPUs to crunch another project? Maybe you could close down the crunching farm for a few months (gasp, I know, not crunching would stink), but save that money up for a nice down payment on some solar panels. Unfortunatly I am to old to cost justify solar panels before they plant me in the dirt. Yes, when everything in the server room is running at full throttle it does sound a bit like the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. I seldom run everything at once anymore as I try to keep (but seldom succeed) my crunch budget below $500/month. GPU's are my bread and butter as they do about 95% of the work I do.Cheers. ![]() ![]() |

Do you use the GPUs to crunch another project? Sometimes I wonder if it is useful to show all these (beautiful) numbers in members' signatures... ![]() |

----------------------------------------My i7-920 does run 24/7, but no GPU processing, 6 gigs DRAM, whatever fan came in the system, so I don't think that there is a comparison. Regarding the two Core 2 Duos, they were what I had; even if they do 1/3 the work of the i7, that's still about 1000 credits/day. I am bringing on an i7-840QM hyper threaded quad in a couple of days, 8 gigs DRAM, no GPU processing. |

I do envy people who don't have to pay the "Robber Baron" costs of the dispicable and monopolistic Pacific Gas and Electric company. Try $0.495/kwh. Great to see you are bringing more machines online. Crunch on ...![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Sep 8, 2010 9:58:41 PM] |

.49 cents!!!??? WOW! I am lucky enough to live in Fairport, NY, under Fairport Electric. Cost per kWh? .04.
----------------------------------------Just bought a 2.8ghz dual proc server. $50 after shipping. Crunch on! ![]() |

O.K., dragged out my electric bill from the Patch and Pray Power Co.
----------------------------------------Adding the kWh distribution to the generated power, I pay between $0.16-$0.18 kWh. My last whole household bill, with terrifying central air was $381. Don't forget to add delivery if you have separate charges for delivery and power. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by mitrichr at Sep 9, 2010 9:02:22 PM] |

I have several times tried to look at the cost of running my four PC's 24/7 for crunching. It seems to come down to about the price of running a 100-150 watt light bulb, depending on the PC. I am running two Core 2 Duos, one i5 hyper threaded dual core, and one i7 hyper threaded quad. I have another i7 hyper threaded quad on order. I have a KVM switch which will run multiple computers on one monitor, mouse and keyboard. I originally had a crappy one, but think it was only VGA. A better switch currently runs a 21 inch HD flatscreen monitor, which shifts to standby after 15 minutes for energy saving. It's not "off", but it's better than leaving it on. Getting rid of the old CRT frybaby tube also cuts down on heat generation. You do reduce expenses by not running the monitor. So, on my desktops, I turn the monitor off when not working. On the laptops, I have the monitor shut off after five minutes idle.

I blow through "life line' in about a day, tier 1 in a couple of days, tier 2 in about 5 days and then it's a half a buck a KWH. Teir 3 is for us bad people, the energy wasters, the people should be punished and sent to the re-education camp to learn how save electricy. Of course when we save electricity PG&E goes to the California PUC and gets a rate increase because their revenues are dropping. You can't win, you can't tie and you can't get out of the game. ![]() ![]() |
