Hi,
I have tried to run the BOINC client on Ubuntu and Open Suse, but everytime it connects to project at the begining when registering my account, it will exit. Does anyone know how to fix this? THanks, Raymond |

Hi Raymond.
----------------------------------------What client version is this? Do you mean with "ït will exit" as in the BOINC Manager crashing out? We have a work around for you if you like through the terminal window. If you want, I can dig it out, all you than needing to do is visit your My Project page and copy/paste the account key into the command. You have ascertained that the core client boinc is running when you look in the system monitor or with TOP? ttyl

I already downloaded the latest linux client today and installed this on Open SUSE. But the client returned this message when exits:
Error: Memory VFS already contains file 'webexternallink.xpm! SIGSEGV: segmentation violation ....... Any help? Thanks, |

SIGSEGV is no good and "Error: Memory VFS already contains file 'webexternallink.xpm!" giving info I've not seen before at WCG, but discussed at malariacontrol forums and here http://wiki.anothergeek.ca/BOINC and here http://bolt.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=5850
----------------------------------------If on Ubuntu and having Synaptic Package Manager, suggest to uninstall what BOINC you have now, boot and then to grab the package from the SPM. That has proven to work fine... it's either 6.10.17 or 6.10.56 or 58. It should per default install as a daemon/service, and all users just facilitating so whoever logs in can run BOINC Manager.

Segmentation defaults are really annoying to troubleshoot. If you are running the latest SUSE and latest BOINC and your BOINC process is still getting terminated due to segdefault, maybe try an earlier version of BOINC?
You would probably need to do a core dump analysis to figure out the cause. Could be a memory issue on your end too. |

You can run BOINC without the BM and control the operation from a Terminal Window with the boinccmd. Just curious, if interested to try, the said attach command with boinccmd is simple. If the object is purely to run CEP2, I somehow fear that it wont run successfully. What are the specs of the hardware. Do they meet the minima of the Systems Requirement page?

I'm not to be considered an expert so my solutions may be somewhat superficial, but how did you uninstall boinc? If (in Ubuntu) you use the terminal command:
----------------------------------------$ sudo aptitude purge boinc-manager boinc-client everything is supposed be removed, including config and data files. Then install from the repository (synaptic) again. Bart [Edit 2 times, last edit by dividedbymyself at Sep 1, 2010 8:47:41 PM] |

I found that when I downloaded the 6.6 client from Berkeley and the program can connect to project without exit.
It seems the 6.10 client for Linux is not stable. |

hmmm, Ingleside said something about 6.10.57 being instable v.v. GPU crunching and the changelog confirms that http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=2518&nowrap=true#33679. WCG currently is auditing the 6.10.57 code from a security perspective. Seen nothing of an instability with 6.10.58 I'm running on both Linux and Windows.
----------------------------------------Anyway, if 6.6 did the trick for you that's great (which point release exact and who's distro?). Plz let us know OS/CPU/RAM/VM data by posting the first 30 lines of the client startup log, so we can take that as a reference for anyone who incurs similar. thank in persisting to get crunching for WCG. edit: spelling
