WCG hardware recommendations

Suggestion for the following page, https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=water
(Close to the bottom of the page), What are the recommended minimum system specifications?

I think this should be reworded to reflect the practicalities of crunching, and be more helpful:
The wording “recommended minimum” can be misleading; it was fine for single core systems, now it's not so applicable - more of a pitfall. Consider using “Minimum System Requirements” and explain the limitations (i.e. Minimum spec to run on One CPU thread), and a more clear “Recommended System Specification” along with an explanation, X amount of RAM and Y amount of HDD space per thread.
For Example,
Computing for Clean Water 400 MB 100 MB Windows1, Mac, Linux3
Perhaps, up to 400MB RAM per Task (core/thread) and up to 100MB HDD Space Per core/thread (if that is the case).
This may not account for tasks sitting in memory, but that is a limitation, so it can be stated.

Re: WCG hardware recommendations

Suggest something simple in language. E.g. borrowing from the SR page:

"In addition, each research project has its own requirement for memory and disk space. These are as follows and have to be multiplied per concurrent science process either active of paused (footnote 4)":

The italic bit could also be footnoted. Will look at my FAQ matrix which shows the actual observed, the WCG values being with a safety margins if models grow real big. With LAIM on being recommended for CEP2 that needs a footnote, "Recommended to select "Leave Application in Memory when preempted", to retain in (virtual) memory when paused during computer use.

cheers

Re: WCG Hardware Recommendations and System Configurations

A review of the Project Hardware Requirements literature (page) with the addition of Best (Reccomended) Configurations, as above.

Hardware Requirements reword suggestion:
In order to participate in World Community Grid, you need an Internet connection. If you wish to see the graphics (Boinc Basic Mode) the ability to display graphics is needed.

In addition, each research project has its own requirement for memory and disk space.

Minimum and Recommended system specifications, per work unit* (Core/Thread):

........................... Requirements
Research Project... Available Memory, Disk Space, Operating Systems
(Minimum) Recommended

* Partially completed tasks kept in memory use up additional resources,

PS. You might want to consider grouping the CEP2 requirements:

Research Project One-Time Download Per Workunit Download Per Workunit Upload
Computing for Clean Water 10 MB 0.001 MB 0.5 MB
The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 200 MB 0.1 MB 20 - 80 MB
The Clean Energy Project - Type A* 4.5 MB 0.5 MB 1.0 MB
The Clean Energy Project - Type B* 4.5 MB 0.5 MB 8.5 MB
Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 10 MB 1-20 MB 1 MB
Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2 0.7 MB 0.1 MB 0.2 MB
Help Fight Childhood Cancer 1.0 MB 0.1 MB 0.1 MB
Help Conquer Cancer 1.0 MB 0.1 MB 0.1 MB
Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 12.0 MB 1.5 MB 0.1 MB
FightAIDS@Home 1.5 MB 0.1 MB 0.1 MB

Re: WCG Hardware Recommendations and System Configurations

I disagree with the minimum requirements for DDD2. It requires way more swap file space. I see its usage like 400 MB per WU on. The minimum will only get you errored tasks.

Re: WCG Hardware Recommendations and System Configurations

Still not a single error but 3 consecutive which I know were my own doing). 3.5GB static VM on quad (which is still barely used).

Give me some observational data and I'll be happy to integrate the ranges on The Matrix. Give us RAM allowed and VM overall for the system so we have an idea of what we're looking at. As one helper commented "Wish we could look over the shoulder to see what the heck is being done to that computer". :O)
