Good Evening Everyone!
----------------------------------------I wanted everyone's opinion on my newest addition to my crunching arsenal ! It's a IBM blade, with two Xeon 3.4 Ghz processors (HT), (2) 1 GB sticks of RAM, 2 SCSI HDs (74GBs?). I'm currently in the process of installing Ubuntu Extreme Edition 10.04. I paid $175. I feel like I got a good deal. What do you guys think? CRUNCH ON! Nick Croce ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Nickoli at Aug 18, 2010 1:28:24 AM] |

For $175 it is a steal. Might want to add some RAM.

Hey Sgt.
----------------------------------------I thought I was going to need an an extra .5 or gig of RAM, but it seems to be hovering at about 1.2/2 gigs of usage. ![]() |

Hey Sgt. I thought I was going to need an an extra .5 or gig of RAM, but it seems to be hovering at about 1.2/2 gigs of usage. If you only have 2 gig of ram and it starts using all of that, it will start using swap space which is a lot slower. It depends on which projects you are running. If you think the amount of ram is sufficient for what you are doing, great. But if you sense it is slowing down I would look at upping it. Probably takes ECC ram which can be expensive depending exactly what kind. If you are satisfied that is all that counts. Let us know what kind of through put you get. Cheers

My performance seems to be a bit lackluster. WUs are taking so very long. I'm considering turning off HT. Could it be possible to have two CPUs @ 3.4 both with HT only putting out 2 days of work per day?

The older Xeons are not exactly the fastest per GHz.
----------------------------------------Here are the stats for 2 machines, both running @ 3.2GHz Dual Xeon 3.2 w/ HT: 8/20/10 0:002:03:34:09 2,631 5 8/19/10 0:003:19:37:51 4,596 9 8/18/10 0:005:06:41:44 5,662 14 8/17/10 0:003:14:04:47 3,151 11 8/16/10 0:002:19:36:31 2,996 9 8/15/10 0:005:09:26:23 6,215 19 8/14/10 0:003:16:44:39 3,827 17 8/13/10 0:002:23:06:58 3,352 8 8/12/10 0:002:16:17:38 2,999 10 8/11/10 0:004:09:17:20 5,420 14 8/10/10 0:002:22:24:34 4,268 8 8/9/10 0:005:19:54:06 7,168 14 8/8/10 0:002:07:21:49 2,860 6 8/7/10 0:003:15:28:18 5,484 10 Phenom II X2 550BE (unlocked to 4 cores) @ 3.2: 8/20/10 0:002:09:11:41 8,657 27 8/19/10 0:004:18:06:25 17,574 58 8/18/10 0:005:01:55:29 18,523 56 8/17/10 0:004:22:08:13 18,773 54 8/16/10 0:003:13:09:46 14,386 49 8/15/10 0:001:10:42:56 5,293 18 8/14/10 0:001:14:19:12 6,135 14 8/13/10 0:003:03:05:05 11,643 26 8/12/10 0:001:08:44:12 4,952 9 8/11/10 0:003:16:42:30 12,202 16 8/10/10 0:004:03:05:01 13,123 20 8/9/10 0:004:02:12:42 12,893 17 8/8/10 0:004:02:11:42 13,575 19 8/7/10 0:004:09:42:59 14,687 23 Granted, the first is 2 cores + 2 HT and the second is 4 cores, but that's a big difference in both points and results per day. The production also depends on wingman timing, so your amount per day will vary. [Edit 2 times, last edit by pirogue at Aug 20, 2010 3:54:52 PM] |

My performance seems to be a bit lackluster. WUs are taking so very long. I'm considering turning off HT. Could it be possible to have two CPUs @ 3.4 both with HT only putting out 2 days of work per day? Depending on the application a WU under HT will need between 1.5 and 2 times the elapsed time of a WU running alone. But as you can see from the ratio above your daily production will be more with HT than without. Up to 25-30 % more depending on how well the application benefits from HT.If you really want to try running only one task per physical core I would advise you to not turn HT off but to simply tell BOINC to use only 50 % of processors. This way other background processes (networking, etc...) will have a smaller impact on the processing of WUs, thanks to HT. |
