my appologies if this ? has already been asked/answered....
if i do beta test would i be able to choose which pc,s can be used for beta? as i have many choices and a few of which i cannot get to as easily as others... tia  |

yes, you can. In the Beta Testing panel on My Grid you select the Device Profiles that will run Beta. Use one Profile for the devices you want to run Beta and a different profile for the other PCs. Uncheck the Participate in Beta Testing for the second profile.
----------------------------------------Example: PC A set to Home, PC B set to Work. In Beta Testing select (check) Home and unselect (uncheck) Work. The PC A will get Beta work when available but PC B will not. Bill P

Hi,
Sorry to bump an old thread but I found this the most approriate thread to use for this. I want to participate in Beta testing and from my knowledge, beta testing is assigned via your device profiles. Then Beta work units are sent to the computer and processed as high priority. This may require a bit of feedback for the techs. Here are my issues though... I run a number of computer ranging from a pentium 3 (or 4) to a 6-core AMD 1100T. I set my profiles according to how powerful the comp is and how often it runs. If I set my home profile to recieve Beta, then all the comps on that profile receive it. However, I am not always able to access the computers to provide feedback due to the nomadic nature of my life and the location of the computers. If I run beta, what happens if i process units and am unable to give feedback in time or if at all? Am I still being useful? |

YesI always admire the few beta-testers who are able to return useful comments about errors that they encounter, but that is a function of luck as much as skill. Most of us just crunch beta units silently. Lawrence |

Oh great. Thanks for the reply. Then I am in and I will do my best.
Out of interest, it would seem that the units are sent according to machine spec. If this is the case, would it be best to assign it to my most powerful computers or is wider range of computers better? For the moment, I will only opt in one computer (the most powerful) and see how it goes. If I like it, then I can opt in others too. |

WCG actually would prefer a wider range even if it would take a little longer. The reason is to make sure the work runs well on all devices not just top end. If there are problems with certain machines, this is how you would find out before causing a major problem. Some contributors are using machines from their jobs (or other sources) and need them to stay reliable 24/7.

Yeah, that makes sense to be honest. I will see how it runs though.
Are there any pitfalls to running it? I have a number of machines that I am not able to access and I am worried that the WUs will cause errors in the program or do they just report as errors. If they report as errors, do we still get points and time credited? |

I haven't had any trouble with running BETAs except for CEP2 which some machines don't like. Other then that, I have not yet seen anything bad come about. However, that isn't a guarantee of safety considering they are still considered BETA for a reason. If you can't risk the random system issue, then it shouldn't be risked at those times. You also still get run time on errors, but I don't remember if any points are given for those or not.

In the short term, I will run in on the two computers that I have at home. Once I am happy with it, I will extend it to the computers that I have access to atleast once a week. From what you are saying, it is best to not use the computers that I have very limited access to. |
