Re: Join The International Team

Has anyone noticed that the credits are not being applied for work units uploaded yesterday or today? I have this, http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=bwcg&team=25834, as one of my home tabs. It allows me to keep track of my points. Nothing has changed since Monday.

Dave...I've noticed also, the Free DC stats were last updated on "Data Updated : Tue Oct 26, 05:48:44 2010 BST", according to their web site. Maybe they're having some issue. Our stats are being updated on WCG.

I'm sure the Free DC stats will be updated at some point.

Re: Join The International Team

Good morning *!

Hypernova, I found a power consumption tester and was finally able to do some tests with different setups. Here are the results:

The testbox was a quad Q6600@3,4Ghz with ATI 4850, 3 WD HDDs in Raid0

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all I tested it with Windows7 x64:
Idle - 155W
Crunching HCC - 245W
Crunching HCC + Milkyway on GPU - 295W

So GPU needs just 50W more while crunching.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then I checked the consumption using Dotsch/UX Linux running from a USB stick:
Idle - 175W
Crunching HCC - 275W

I was not able to try GPU on Linux - had some troubles with the ATI driver. Will fix it as soon I have a bit more time.

It's really interesting, that Linux needs more power. Probably that's related to the fact that HCC WUs are much more efficient on Linux.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then I've measured consumption of my laptop (dual T7300@2Ghz) running Vista x86:
Idle: 20W
Crunching HCC - 40W

When I see runtimes of HCC WUs on this laptop and on the quad described before - the quad is doing same job as three laptops would do, but it's consuming exactly double amount of power. Something to think about while building new crunching systems....

Re: Join The International Team

So GPU needs just 50W more while crunching.

This is excellent news. It means that a solution with two GPU's (SLI) would add only 100 Watts on a machine. The flops/watt ratio will become excellent.
Let's hope that WCG tech does read this thread and be even more motivated. If we want to be environmentally friendly we need to crunch with GPU. peace

Re: Join The International Team

Thanks everyone for BirthDay wishes,
it was a great day. Helped a friend repair a fridge
and his computer. Quite the experience. His
fridge was too cold, his computer too hot...
shoulda hooked em together :)
You all have a good day!

Re: Join The International Team

Hypernova, unfortunately it's not 100% correct...
It would add 100W in comparison to the same box which already has two GPU's installed and being GPU-idle.
I've read somewhere, that such GPU's need ~50W each while idling.

That means, if you have now a pure CPU-crunching box with some primitive graphics consuming very less power and would add 2 powerfull graphic cards as SLI, you would see 200W difference.

But it's still ok for that great performance it would bring.
