Keithhenry,
Thanks. There is a way to manage it and perhaps i will restart but your method is worth a try. The last part is confusing on my part. Basically as long as I had other projects running other then soley Beta or DDD-2 I would never receive any Beta or DDD-2 WU's. |

Given my experience, it seems to be a matter of having your machine ask for work at the time that they have betas available AND not having any other work to send to you at that moment. I'm not sure that last part is intended (or correct) but it fits what I've seen. I have my machines set to "Connect about every 0.00 days" since I have a DSL connection and "Additional work buffer" is normally 3.5 days. I have two profiles. The default profile has the projects I normally want aside from DDDT2. The second profile is just DDDT2 only. Both profiles are set to accept betas. On my quad, I run WCG only so since DDDT2 started, I normally have it set to the second profile for DDDT2 only and a larger work buffer than normal. That way, when DDDT2 hit, I try to grab what I can. Once a day typically, I reset the work buffer to normal and switch the profile to the default to keep a normal buffer of the regular WCG projects I'm crunching. Prior to starting this with DDDT2, I had gotten a total of four betas over the last couple of years that I had been signed up for betas. Since the start of DDDT2, I've gotten another 57 betas and am almost halfway to bronze. Not sure it's logical or correct but this is what I've done and my experience with getting betas. I am of a slightly different opinion... It seems to me that: 1) If the computer has a good reputation (that is it is getting and returning WUs consistently for 3 or more days) 2) Your device profiles are set to receive Beta WUs 3) Your work queue has room to download additional WUs (in terms of time...not space) and finally 4) You ask for work at the correct time (when there are Beta WUs available), then you will get them. Now I don't know for sure but it looks like what Kieth was doing was making sure that there was tons of room in his Cache, and then setting the computer to very frequently ask for work (work that was not there) then he was setting himself up to get the Beta units. Also the scheme seems to ensure that he gets a better than average shot at the DDDT2 WUs because he is frequently asking for them and has provided plenty of space in the Cache for them. I cannot copy his scheme in that I have one of the Device Profiles set to get CEP2 WUs for my Ubuntu computers, another for Windows computers outside my home that I only run cancer projects on, one for just getting DDDT2 Wus for my netbook and one for in home windows computers. I won't bore you with the details on all that but.. I got all my Betas recently on the Home Windows computers because they had good reputations, were requesting work at the right time, were set to run Beta and they were reporting work (so they had work cache space). At that point, only the home windows computers were set to get the Betas, but that is changed now. I would really like to know If Beta work units are given priority⦠That is to say that if I had a good reputation computer that was using a device profile that allowed betas and I was requesting work of any kind (which means that I have room in my work Cache), would the beta WUs get fetched first or would it just get the normal work. Or is there some more complicated algorithm? If we knew the answer for that, then it would simplify things. I am going to add to the suggestion box a scheme whereby we can prioritize our work cache more easily. I will post it here when I post it in the suggestion box; right now I have not thought it through well enough. And, all things considered, it is likely not to be high on the priority list when I do post it. ![]() Everyone have a great day...and crunch on.. |

RT, I expect that you're absolutely right - technically. Your 3rd and 4th items are the key. You have to ask for the work when the servers have it and BOINC needs to think you need work. Betas usually seem to be rather limited in number, thus they "go fast" so asking for them as close to when they get loaded on the servers is more important that with regular projects. If BOINC doesn't think you need work, it's not going to ask for anything, much less betas. If you need work and have projects that have work selected, BOINC will pretty much keep your queue full of work. It won't ask for more until you return some work or get far enough along on some that the amount of work in your queue is less that you say you want to have. By setting my "Connect every X days" to zero and setting my queue to any value larger than my normal value, I am asking for work more that I would otherwise. By asking for work for projects that are unlikely to have any at a given point in time, I improve the odds that I'll get betas. It seems the key may be to always need work and frequently ask for work for projects that don't have any.
