Re: Can you do more with less? 106.5 Floating Point MIPS/W

@David Autumns: Hypernova suggested to reduce the fan speed, not me. But thanks anyway. biggrin

Re: Can you do more with less? 106.5 Floating Point MIPS/W

I was sure someone mentioned that a reduced temperature limited the leakage losses within the core

but when I looked through bleary eyes this morning I couldn't see it

I was sure it was you sir smile

It works though whoever it was

Re: Can you do more with less? 106.5 Floating Point MIPS/W

Was me here; "using a fan can often reduce the power usage, as leakage increases with heat".
Running GPU tasks I can see power usage rising with GPU temperature (with fixed fan speed). So I set it nice and high, to reduce the power leakage, as much as my ears can withstand. The same applies to CPUs, just not quite as much.

I have 2 more systems to report.
The first is a somewhat dated Opteron 1354 @ 2.2GHz (1.25V).
This Quad system has a Whetstone of 1834 and a Dhrystone of 5572.
It uses 203W while the GT240 is snoozing. At 36 FPMips/W it’s nothing special; Dave’s Whetstone is higher and Dave’s Wattage is about half that, making this system much less than half as efficient!
It does have 3 large Hard Disk drives, a DVDRW, 3 big fans, an HP PSU, and uses DDR2, but that is no excuse.

Secondly, and more optimistically is my Q8400; this is in a system with a small motherboard and a 250W PSU. It uses DDR2 but only has a single HDD, a DVDRW and a USB wireless adapter.
With 4 WCG tasks running it soaks up 112W, and has a Whetstone of 2716. The Dhrystone is 7953. That is with a 10W idle GPU.
Although this is only 95 FPMips/W it’s not bad.

Still looking forward to Hypernova's HT-Off reslts (and dark Maths tongue )...

Re: Can you do more with less? 106.5 Floating Point MIPS/W

ah ha there it is - thanks skgiven ;-)

I have been banished from wcg for today on the monster cruncher crying
After claiming it was now completely stable and I bagged my Sapphire for HCC I redirected my efforts onto HPF2
A very warm day in Brussels combined with too low a fan speed and....
There it was a bag full of "computation errors" sad

The WCG servers have packed their bags and taken their work units home with them. not talking
No more work units for me today if that's what I am going to do with them biggrin

I have tried everything disconnect reconnect uninstall reinstall changing my PC's name but try as I might I can't convince them it's not me and my Green Machine really does deserve a second chance.

Looking for large prime numbers at the moment d oh

Roll on 2am Belgian Time. I'll be back <--- has to be said with an Austrian accent

Kevin I promise to be good from now on biggrin

Disaster

Dave

This seems appropriate in the circumstances

"It isn't easy getting more that 106.5 Floating Point MIPS/Watt"

is not such a snappy title for a tune

Enjoy biggrin

Hi Dave,
Excluded because you tried to be Green crying
When you move projects it is always a good idea to Mix and Match; run several projects on the one Rig, until you know they will run well.
It really is a pity WCG cannot identify failing Projects rather than just excluding the system. HPF2 is one I have seen fail on a couple of systems for me, and I know others (Including Hypernova) have suffered a similar fait.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php...p;catid=6&subcat=1328

You can smell it in the air like oncoming rain

it has a strange requirement placed on obtaining it though

see this page for details

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php...mp;catid=6&subid=1328

6 2.8Ghz Cores with a 95W TDP for £170

Back in my P111 days I said I would never pay more than £200 for a processor. Looks like I will still be able to keep that pledge smile

106.5 is looking threatened smile

Re: Can you do more with less? 106.5 Floating Point MIPS/W

first pass 126.6 FP MIPS per Watt

Let the tweaking commence biggrin

For those concerned about the 905E don't worry it will be recycled.... into a very nice server I'm building wink

edit just noticed I have bagged another sapphire peace
