New AMD processor problems

Does anybody have any idea why the new AMD AXMD2400FJQ4C processor that I installed would only run at 800Mhz/133Mhz on a Compaq Presario 8000Z - 8QSXE1?

The specs for the new processor are 1.8Ghz/266Mhz.

So far, I've upgraded the BIOS to the latest version available from Compaq (v. sp18783). No luck there.

The processor that was replaced ran at 1.6Ghz/266Mhz, but the new processor shows up in the BIOS setup as an 800Mhz chip. Unfortunately there are no options in the BIOS setup for overclocking.

At this point I'm stumped.

Hopefully someone around here will have a clue. I sure don't.

Re: New AMD processor problems

Hi Julied

Are you running an Athlon 64 ?

I can't find the ref to the AMD chip you mention on the AMD site.

My only comment at this point would be have you set the memory clock speed correctly as on DDR memory the clock speed is 1/2 the rate for your memory chips so if you have 400Mhz chips (PC3200) then you need to set the memory clock speed to 200Mhz.

The other posibility is that it's a mobile CPU you have there (just guessing now) and they will underclock themselves when on batteries or it's just not needed to save power and that is what's causing your apparantly slow clocking rates.

Could you double check the processor's identity code and get back to us or let us know what you think this processor is.....

Best of luck

Regards
Dave

Re: New AMD processor problems

Hi Julied

It's definintely the Mobile Athlon XP Processor running at 266Mhz FSB and 1800Mhz CPU Clock it's not on the AMD site but AXMD2400FJQ4C is for real.

The website I found claims that the CPU Voltage is 1.35V which might be a problem for your chip on your motherboard. The standard Athlon XP runs at 1.65V. Try changing the CPU voltage to 1.35V in your BIOS. I would deliberately set the Memory Clock Speed to 133Mhz in the BIOS too (2*133Mhz = 266Mhz FSB that you are looking for) this might kick start the processor into it's real clock speed of 1800Mhz

The AMD mobile processors run AMD's PowerNow! technology which is supposed to reduce the clock frequency when a laptop is running on batteries so it might just be possible that it is in this mode - however your PC appears to be a desktop.

If none of the above work and as you say you have flashed the BIOS I'm sorry but it just might be that your motherboard is not compatable with the Mobile Version of the AMD Atlon.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards

Dave

Re: New AMD processor problems

Hey, thanks for the great input, David. That answers that, I guess. The BIOS setup screens don't have any options for setting voltages or clock speeds, so I think you are correct; I'm SOL.

Why Compaq would cripple the setup for this computer is way beyond me. I feel cheated. frustrated
