I see that this particular chart (#18 in the list) is marked as discontinued. I guess I can't really complain but I found that one particularly useful. I'll miss that one.

I agree. That particular chart was consulted often (and it was one of the few that I could understand). Not complaining, just sighing.

Yes, I too also miss that, nice simple, easy to read chart, although Sekerob discontinued it at the same time as removing the estimated completion line from the Run Time Share by (In)Active Project chart. Therefore, the two actions must have been triggered by far too many complaints (either from the crunchers themselves, or from the background WCG staff), that early completion of projects were having a negative impact upon the grid itself.

That particular chart was very useful. I understand it might misguide you if watched daily, but not when used to check twice a year for some approximates of the projects we have. Now there is no clue how far each project is I hope the chart is coming back.

At least there is one project which is updated several times a month by its scientists, see The Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy Crunching Chart thread for details and direct links to the HCMD2 scientists charts.

I suppose the only person who can really comment on this, is Sekerob himself... The background WCG staff has always [to this very moment] been most gracious in allowing me, a volunteer as all other members, to use the [confidential] CA periodic update report info to narrow down the guesstimated durations, the beginning / end dates of publicly known phases and progress percentages (sometimes dynamically adjusted based on a resized known body of work), without ever a dissonant word on the charts, any chart. Was the chart useful... well the public minority report opine implied it was not good enough... we read "No wonder the Science Timeline Keeping Service has been suspended" and so it ended... got other things to do, wholly more satisfying and wholly
WCG

Hi Sekerob,
I guess the (apparent) early end to HFCC that was not wildly guesstimated more closely to actual, which then precipitated a barrage of (misdirected and inappropriate) criticism was the straw that broke the camel's back for you. Can't blame you as you and the other CAs continually step directly into the line of fire each time a cruncher decides they know more than the whole of WCG (myself included a couple of time, a while ago) or at the other end of the spectrum cannot take some responsibility to read the FAQ (guilty again) I thank you for the array of charts you have created (and continue to maintain). Having been here for 2 years now I have digested the information from all your work and is often the case in the IT world, the one report most valuable is also the one most difficult to create. As long as we do not get a guesstimation meltdown (or new full-time projects), I will be relying on that last copy of the Timeline chart to guide my attack on the WCG projects. Thanks. You make a difference. ![]() |

barrage of (misdirected and inappropriate) criticism ![]() The HR director at my old job called these kinds of people PUPs: Perpetually Unhappy People, who will always find something to complain about. Sek, thanks for both taking time out to reply and to provide all those useful graphs you do.
----------------------------------------Just remember, although quiet by nature, there's always more "Perpectually Happy People" (and hence, appreciative) than "Perpectually Unhappy People" around - and it's all the people in that first group which are grateful for the indications your graphs (that one in particular) have and continue to provide. Would you consider ever bringing back some form of indicator - may be, 1qtr '11, 2half '12 etc., as that way, less criticism can be tied to estimated completion dates being slightly out (and more importantly for you) less work is required to update them? ![]() |

Sek, I will miss the chart.. i did enjoy that one the best. and of the charts i looked at it was always the easiest one for me to read... call me old fashioned or simple or whatever but when you start putting graphics behind graphs and stacking graphs on other graphs it got a little confusing to me ... but that one graph i enjoyed
----------------------------------------I will miss it but i understand your reasoning ![]() |
