Another way to help

I happen to live near an institution which had a project, successfully completed, via WCG. One of the lab scientists lives across the street.

I commented to him that I had several pieces of computer equipment surplus to my needs. I have a couple of perfectly good monitors, several keyboards, and two external DVD writers. I said I would be delighted to donate any that would help.

Today, I donated a 20" monitor, wide screen. One of their monitors had seen its last days.

This simply adds to my feeling of being part of the process.

So, if you happen to live near a facility where there is a WCG project, or, really, any project dependent on the community of BOINC projects crunchers, let them know that you are there and let them know what you might do to aid the cause.

We are in reality working as much for our own benefit as for the benefit of others.

Re: Another way to help

I hope that for this idea you wont throw mud on me. ;)
For a long time I am thinking about creating larger computing center for WCG. I cooperate with company that have almost all needed infrastructure. The catch is that in long run for this small company it would be to much cost and trouble.
The solution would be to open new services at USA and GB market.
The catch is finding customers for dedicated servers. Because of costs in Poland it woud be profitable for customers, comapny and would allow to start aditional activity for WCG.
If someone likes this ide write here.

Hi Sylwester,

A small note of caution. If you post email addresses like you do, the whole world of spammers and other grit can read it and will use it. If you put the address in My Grid > My Profile and allow members to see it, only members can see it [a little icon appears at bottom of your posts which is clickable too]

cheers

Re: Another way to help

Well as much as I like WCG i heat **** it idea of user profiles settings and so one. It's worth as much as many www pages when you enter them you(at least I ) would like to **** author for all garbage on his site. Especially when something hidden on it uses almost half of CPU. No matter that you have AddBlock instaled.
But in the end you are right about showing e-mail.

Re: Another way to help

Sylwester-

Hi, I will not "throw mud" on anyone with any idea as to how to spread The Word and The Work. We have too much of a sort of inbred culture here. We need more visions of a wider world with more people who are not of necessity technical getting interested.

Well, so much for my train of thought. I had another pithy thing to say, but my wife called me away to help her, and so I lost it.

So, maybe more later when it comes back to me.

Oh yes!! Here it is:

There is not enough being done with social media, Facebook, RSS feeds, blogging and the like.

WCG is getting better with Facebook. For quite a while it sat there, no one writing anything. Now it appears that someone or some people are actually putting up content. So far, there are as I write 2642 "fans". This is probably not bad; but there are today as I write 320,671 total active crunchers in BOINC Stats on all projects. WCG claims current 259475. I personally think that is an optimistic figure, but, O.K., I am not going to argue numbers with anything related to IBM. So, 2642 "fans" out of 259475 active crunchers. You know what that is? 1%. 0.01. Frankly, that sucks. WCG needs to do a better stronger job promoting itself on Facebook. What ever the promotion writers produce is being seen by 1% of the possible base.

RSS feeds
. I have every conceivable feed from WCG have news feeds and forum feeds. Here is the current state of news feeds: HFCC last feed item Nov 21, 2009; FAAH Mar 2, 2010; HCMD2 Apr 8, 2010, but before that Jan 8, 2010. This just does not get it done, the project must stay in the public eye, even if right now the public is us. There must be interesting things or people to write about. Cannot find the writer or the time? Remain stuck with diminishing numbers.

Over at LHC@home, there are a number of blogs, available via RSS, and people write in those blogs almost every day.

Blogs: Projects nered to find people who can write and get them to write blogs. I have two blogs at Wordpress. Both are on Music and Public radio in the USA. But I did a big post on crunching, http://richardmitnick.wordpress.com/2009/03/27/are-you-a-cruncher/. This post got more views than any of my posts before or since. So someone from I think All Project Stats asked me to do a blog on crunching. I demurred. I said that this is not my area of expertise, I had pretty much shot my load in that one post.

The projects need to realize that most of the people who have ever crunched have gone away, for one reason or another. We need to advertise, and blogs are a good way of doing that.

So, just more stuff for people to ponder.

@Sylwester Zdanowski
If you want to authorize people reading the forum to send you emails the box to check is not in My Grid->My Profile but in My Forum Profile in the tools bar of the forum pages.
In My Grid->My Profile it is only for authorizing WCG and/or your team captain.

I am not sure I understand what you have written in your last post however I thank you for having edited it yourself: that will save WCG Admin's time if you were thinking of words appearing in the list of forbidden words. smile

That said, if you have your browser using "almost half of CPU, no matter that you have AddBlock installed" you should look for something else than WCG pages which are generally very simple from a source code viewpoint. When I have such a problem I would rather check browser's options, or pages sitting for hours with lots of flashing objects, videos running in a corner, etc...
And I would not forget pages using Flash Player or similar tools.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Another way to help

Facebook, blogging - This and more I call usless. Imagine that instend of watching soccer match (only example) you spend your time on reading Seneka letters (only example).
Facebook and many others are like soccer match. It is easier to watch soccer than to do something more useful. For instanc I started software project School Parents Relations System in SVN on google.
My Idea abowe is crazy idea to take small company in to sometchig else than making money.
@JmBoullier , thanks but.... ;)
