So, the problem is more likely to do with either the cpu's is too new so isn't correctly detected, windows doesn't report #cpu's correctly possibly due to being "wrong" version to support so many cores A simple look at the Task Manager snapshot in the opening post is enough to see that this point is irrelevant.Back to BOINC, since you know its internals better than most of us, is there still a hardcoded default maximum for the number of cores/threads in the distributed modules, and if "yes" how much is it? Or if it is more clear this way, what is the number of threads above which one needs to use the ncpus option in the cc_config file? |

A simple look at the Task Manager snapshot in the opening post is enough to see that this point is irrelevant. Well, it's easy for an application to limit #cpus to be less than how many cores windows detects & uses, but I can't see any limits in BOINC so as far as BOINC goes this isn't relevant. Back to BOINC, since you know its internals better than most of us, is there still a hardcoded default maximum for the number of cores/threads in the distributed modules, and if "yes" how much is it? Or if it is more clear this way, what is the number of threads above which one needs to use the ncpus option in the cc_config file? I'm not aware there's ever being any limits, but then again I don't have any 32+ core computers to test this on so... Atleast under Windows, BOINC uses SystemInfo.dwNumberOfProcessors There's no mentioning about any upper limits, and this is the normal way to get #cpus under windows. Since BOINC still gets this wrong, it seems to be either a general limitation of SystemInfo.dwNumberOfProcessors can't report more than 5-bit numbers (32), or windows correctly counts #cpus' themselves, but fails to pass-on correct info to other applications... Linux uses other methods to get #cpu's, so can have other limitations than windows... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

hmmm, well Windows sure enough is identifying them for itself, there maybe a licensing thing not allowing a user application to utilize all cores... one reads funny stuff about Redmond policies... oops, the function in Berkeley Open Source might than be in breach... schmarren for legal eagles.... Crestj Could you post the specs of your 48 cores machine? Is it Magny Cours based? Which processor model? How much RAM? Power consumption? Thanks a lot Certainly.... It is an HP Proliant DL585 G7 with 4 of these CPU's (AMD Opteron 6176 SE ) 32Gb Ram. Not sure about power consumption as I'm only interested in pure performance of this thing right now ;-) |
