Hi, I'm doing some research on distributed computing for my dissertation and having a bit of difficulty!
---------------------------------------- I was wondering If someone could point me to where I can find out how many people are involved in fightAIDS@home? I would also be interested to know why you guys chose to support this project over the numerous ones out there? Any links to good pages of major statistics would be appreciated! Thanks! This page might be a start: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=faah
As for me, WCG is a back-up project. ATM, neither Malaria, Orbit nor Virtual Prairie have work. |

Welcome wetfoot, as I'm assuming that you've looked over the WCG website, you'll no doubt have seen that we've got several "sub projects" on-going within the overall "WCG project" - namely;
----------------------------------------Fight Aids @ Home (FA@H), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (HPF2), Help Conquer Cancer (HCC), Help Fight Childhood Cancer (HFCC), Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2 (HCMD2), Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 (DDDT2), as well as Nutritious Rice for the World (NRftW), which has just finished this past month. Now, as we've got so many "sub-projects" within the overall "WCG project", each member can participate in one, two or many (including all) projects at the same time. Therefore, I don't think it'll be possible to say x members are participating in FA@H. Me personally, I'm currently participating in DDDT2 & FA@H, although in due course, these will change over time. If you're looking for numbers, then I'd suggest having a look at the statistics page as a starter, then at the numerous articles that are accessible via the Research pages As always, there is the forum for you to ask questions - we're a friendly bunch here ![]() PS. whilst you're doing your dissertation, please feel free to donate your spare computer cycles this way - as, people will tend to take you more seriously if they can see that you're actively participating. You never know, you might just like it here and decide to stay ![]() ![]() |

Hi guys!
Thanks for the responses! I have run SETI@home and was running BOINC up until a few days ago but now I am testing how much power my pc uses without it running! I have already gone through the stats pages before but was looking for info on numbers but what you say makes sense... My project is focussing on why certain projects such as SETI@home get more coverage than perhaps more deserving ones like FA@home and the Nutritious Rice for the World project. Is it current affairs, advertising, age, rewards or simply fun that attracts people to a project? I have ran a survey of over 100 average people and got some interesting results on this issue. At the moment I am conducting a case study of a few successful projects (in terms of participants) and if I can I want to find one that failed and why... Then I am going to make a quick survey to drop on forums like this for people who are involved to go a bit more in depth into why people choose what the choose and what they think about some of the deeper issues.... Think that sounds a good project for Computer Networks BSc? Will probably do that on the main forum! Will get some WCG projects running after this power usage test! |

And probably most people have selected "If no work is available, send work from other projects", so nearly 100 % of us have actually participated to FAAH, at least with few wu's. It would be interesting to see how many badges of each kind has been rewarded in each project. That would solve your problem too. I wish you luck with your study!

wetfoot,
----------------------------------------Device numbers and members contributing are not known for a specific project [not published]. Guesstimating would be difficult since many at WCG are multi-science contributors. Sometime my quad eats through all 6 active research work-units in one day. Batches awarded of the different kind are also not ad-hoc accessible. Think one team has a member with a script running pulling it off the team member information xml's

Pleas forgive me language.
Why we join project is interesting question. At the bottom I think old homosapiens economicus theory explains everything. Some people like to prey other drink... You may not agree with me but who we are? Small ants without meaning. Posibiliti of contributting to something useful for humanity is quite nice. But for most people understending eaven simple information about how this work is too much. Many are to lazy to read. As a resault they weast many things not only CPU if they take any projest they take something fancy, looking good no mater what it does. |
