In BOINC speak, Homogeneous Redundancy is needed as else the results would not match. For some of the sciences it's even down to the CPU families and for OS-X it seems that is also the case that pre-SL and SL results did not have full compatibility.
----------------------------------------HPF2 and RICE are the exemption on that... they go to any platform asking for work... I'm seeing a HR column getting inserted into the matrix :D
