WCG BOINC 6.2.28. wasu,Just this time. Not sure it's internet connection because I can browse web but the WCG tasks are held at transfer state. How to analyze this problem? I asked which version just in case you used a very old one. This one is OK and when you have this problem I don't think a more recent one would be more clever at recovering. I have seen this problem too after some connection problems more serious than usual, i.e. a temporary hiccup at ISP or router level. In such cases, although it may be possible to surf the net again it happens that you need to quit and restart BOINC to recover and have it see the net again. If it happens once in a while, that's life, ISPs need to reset sometimes. If it becomes really frequent try to find neighbours or friends using the same ISP to see if you are alone with this problem or if they have trouble too. If it's you alone check all your cable connections and/or try to use another port on your router. |

The only times that I have had this problem, I solved it by powering down my router / modem, then restarting them. They re-established the network connection and everything worked.

Hi Joe!
----------------------------------------Sadly, I don't see anything obvious in your message log. Just a few questions while trying to imagine possible causes: - Have you other machines attached to WCG on the same router? - Have you upgraded your firewall recently? - Are you filtering ranges of IP addresses (e.g. to protect a P2P application)? - Is this machine at home or at work? Read you later. Jean. |

Hi Jean,
Just a few questions while trying to imagine possible causes: - Have you other machines attached to WCG on the same router? - Have you upgraded your firewall recently? - Are you filtering ranges of IP addresses (e.g. to protect a P2P application)? - Is this machine at home or at work? In order: -No -No -No -home The machine has been up and running fine since Jan. No changes to the router/firewall etc. Not running any unusual apps. More importantly, still no joy. Thanks Joe |

Joe,
----------------------------------------If I am not misreading your message log the situation of your client is as follows: - 5 tasks successfully uploaded and "Ready to report" - 1 task "Uploading" - no task "Running", although the client is not trying to get new tasks. Although the client can successfully access the reference site via internet it is unsuccessful at contacting the servers either for uploading the last result or for reporting completed tasks. Would you please try the following link from the browser of the failing machine https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi If you get the usual message for unreachable websites it is the whole machine which cannot reach the servers. If you get some kind of XML error message (e.g.unrecognised data**) your browser could reach the server and the problem is with BOINC itself. In this case I would like you to check your firewall (the builtin Windows one or a 3rd party one?). Please check its logs for barred attempts from the BOINC client to the link above, and also check program authorizations. Read you later. Jean. ** My message is in French, so I cannot give you the exact text. |

Hi Jean,
----------------------------------------Actually 6 tasks trying to report. Would you please try the following link from the browser of the failing machine https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi Yielded: XML Parsing Error: junk after document element Location: https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi Line Number 8, Column 1:Content-type: text/plain ^ So my machine has general access. Where are the boinc logs? Do you know the IP and port addresses, I'll try a basic ping. Regards Joe [Edit 1 times, last edit by starlight at Apr 10, 2010 8:57:00 AM] |

Hi Jean, Actually 6 tasks trying to report. From your log: 09/04/2010 10:27:19||Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC The log-file is called stdoutdae.txt (and stdoutdae.old for older info). Do you know the IP and port addresses, I'll try a basic ping. 198.20.8.241 at port 443 (SSL), the address you've already tested. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem the server respond to either ping nor tracert, but since your web-browser did get a connection, atleast your computer does reach the correct destination. Your BOINC-client on the other hand for some reason doesn't seem to have a success, or, it's having problems with the response. Now, since you've re-booted both computer and any routers and so on, you shouldn't hit the problem with BOINC-client getting "stuck" with a bad address atleast... You can try more detailed logging on your connection, this is enabled by editing (or adding if file not already present) a cc_config.xml file, located in your data-directory (C:\ProgramData\BOINC). Use notepad or similar to edit this file. To debug connection-problems, cc_config.xml should atleast include: <cc_config> <log_flags> <file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug> <http_debug>1</http_debug> <proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug> <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug> </log_flags> </cc_config> If you've already got a cc_config.xml, it can also include a <options> </options> -block, if so, place the <log_flags> -block afterwards. And if you've already got a <log_flags>-block, just add the 4 new lines to this part. Especially <http_xfer_debug> and <http_debug> can give very much logged info, so appart for during debugging, it's recommended to disable these again. To disable any of these options, just replace the 1 with a 0, and save the edited file. To start using any of the options, after saving cc_config.xml to data-directory, if BOINC-client already running, goto Advanced view, and select Advanced, Read config file. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." [Edit 3 times, last edit by Ingleside at Apr 10, 2010 12:53:13 PM] |

Actually 6 tasks trying to report. So the failing upload shown in your log has finally succeeded. And the problem would not be permanent. Strange.XML Parsing Error: junk after document element Yes, that's the same message as mine. Location: https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi Line Number 8, Column 1:Content-type: text/plain ^ So my machine has general access. Where are the boinc logs? I was not talking of the BOINC logs (you have shown them already), I was talking of the logs of the firewall where rejected attempts are listed and of the place where program authorizations are shown and can be changed eventually. In ZoneAlarm they call the former Alert Log and the latter Program Control. Which firewall are you using? Ingleside has already given you the next steps we will have to go through to find where and how the communication with the servers is failing. Please follow his instructions. |
