Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

If they did it would probably take 100 years to complete 1 workunit.

We see here that there is a practical cost factor. If a very old system manages to run but takes let's say a month to finish a WU, the ratio watts/WU is absurd. To forget the machine in a corner for a month no problem, it is not lost time for us. But at WCG time is money in terms of electrical energy spent.

By the way it would be very interesting to see what kind of watt/point ratio do we have. I will do over the next week-end some tests with my rigs.
To make a watt/WU ratio would not mean much as the WU crunching time differs according to project and WU type. But a ratio watt/point would make sense as large WUs do bring more points.

I only leave my 'puters on 24x7 during the winter. I figure they are acting as heaters, so the energy is not wasted at all. wink
BTW it would probably take 100 years for me to get that old CPM computer to BONIC. tongue

Cheers coffee

Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

tech wise, old compaq deskpro, PIII-600 kicking about 1 wu/day running 24/7. got pressed into service about 6 months ago after a crash. will continue to crunch but is coming off my desk (yes it is my prime work box atm) soon. This box runs Win 2000 ;) and will continue crunching and collecting my weather station data. its replacement is already crunching

Fredski you did not give any date. Please tell us the dates and maybe you qualify.

Up to now here is where we are with record holders:

Ingleside
-Oldest device crunching for WCG 2003

Sekerob
-Oldest active WCG registered device 27-12-2006

Who will do better? wink

Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

My first device on WCG was a Thinkpad registered on December 2nd 2005. At that time I had most of my computers running the UD agent from grid.org.

I wanted to use that laptop but 100% of CPU usage was too much for it. I found out that the WCG UD Agent had the option to throttle the CPU, so I tried it.

But my first PC ever used for DC projects was a Dell XPS PII-400. I turned it off a month ago to save some electricity, but it works just fine (albeit a little slooooow tongue ).

That machine has been working for DC projects almost 24x7 since April 9th 2001. The last month has been its longest "vacation". In WCG it has completed more than 254 days of CPU time, 767 results returned and 75411 points (combined stats from three "versions" of the same device).

No problem with that fredski. That box started crunching 6 months ago but it is still crunching. I understand the CPU is pretty old PIII-600. So how old is that box?
