interested in a low voltage quad or hyper-threaded quad

I am interested in the possibility of augmenting my crunching with a laptop, so low voltage, but not slow, quad or hyper-threaded quad.

I have a desktop with an I7-920 and it flies in Win7 64bit. But it is 45nm, it's definitely not low voltage, and that is all I see available.

Does anyone have any experience with a low voltage reasonably quick quad or hyper-threaded quad.

Thanks.

Re: interested in a low voltage quad or hyper-threaded quad

You can start with the Intel website.

The i7 Mobile family has a wide range of options, you should pay some attention to the MAX TDP column, but there are many other variables to consider.

For example: the Core i7-820QM has 4 HT cores (8 threads) with a max TDP of 45Watts (45nm) and a Base Frequency of 1.73GHz (max 3.066 GHz with turbo) whereas the Core i7-610E has only 2 HT cores (4 threads) BUT with a Max TDP of 35 W (32nm), 2.53 GHz Base Frequency (3.2 GHz with turbo).

You'll do more parallel work on the i7-820QM, but slower. Which one is better? I'm not really sure, but surely the i7-610E would run cooler.

Also important to reduce power consumption, if this machine is mainly for WCG and/or other distributed computing projects, go for integrated graphics that consumes just a few watts, unless you plan to crunch for DC projects that uses the latest GPUs.

Re: interested in a low voltage quad or hyper-threaded quad

Yes, low power consumption. But, not slow.

I did already look at the Intel products. The problems I see are based in the 45nm silicon chip. Definitely integrated graphics, and I put the monitor to sleep after 5-10 minutes. I also elevate the laptop about an extra 5/8" to allow circulation.

I just do not see anything which looks good for what I want theoretically.

I thought someone might have real time experience. My I7-920 in a desktop runs very cool. To that I can attest. But I think it would be foolish to put that in a laptop. Laptops are not well ventilated and the fans are generally laughable.

The Core i7-610E looks like a possibility.

Re: interested in a low voltage quad or hyper-threaded quad

The i7-6xx are 32nm parts. I have a laptop with a Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz (P7350) that crunches WUs fast enough and I'm sure it's very power efficient. I'd bet a 2.0GHz 32nm Core i7 is even better (much more processing power with probably less energy requirements).

Look at this table:
